Incredibly shallow poll about gifts...

I know this is bad but it came to me because my discussing about TYs and wedding gifts with DH (see other post).

So who's family was more generous with the wedding gifts - total including shower gifts, etc?

Well his immediate family was more generous, but my family paid for the wedding which was way more $$ than their gifts so I'll call it even....

ETS - Sorry I voted for his family accidently

For the wedding, his family by a very small small margin, but that's because his godparents were overly generous
For everything else, I would think about the same.

My family by far. DH is from the south, and southerners don't do big wedding gifts and they definately don't do monetary gifts. Some people got us things like one plate off the registry or two glasses!
Not that I'm complaining; it was very thoughtful of them to send anything at all. I was just a little surprised though
A lot of them traveled to NY too so we were happy to even have them there with us and didn't care so much about the gifts.

We are Irish -- known for being very tight-fisted and my family definitely promotes this sterotype. Half of them are totally out of touch with a NY wedding ($100 frame from my oldest brother, wife and 3 (yes 3) kids), and they thought that besides, a second wedding didn't really even merit a gift. And NOBODY in my family used the registry - I got stuff I do not need nor like.

His family on the other hand was extremely generous (Italian) and stuck to the registry for the bridal shower. This is his second time around too, but they are much more generous than my family -- oh and half of them live out of state too...

PS - Don't any Irish lasses get your dander up, it's just a stereotype that in MY case is true!

Mine. My mom and dad also helped me out a bit paying for the wedding.

I think it was pretty much even...
His family helped with the wedding and his family (including extended) were pretty generous with our shower/ wedding gifts...

My family BY FAR.

Partially it's b/c DH's family is from another part of the country where they don't do things like NYers do.

But the fact that we didn't get anything from his immediate family is still odd.

My family, DH's family did not bring gifts, they were OOTs.

I think it was pretty even at the wedding, excluding his uncle that gave us a bonzai tree he is keeping in his yard for us.

I think my family may have been a little more generous at the shower , b/c they went WAY over board ( but so did his mom), but a few of his mom's freinds were more generous than I'd expect from someone I don't know, but they have $$$ & like to share, I guess.
(like sharing in the form of waterford crystal I didn't register for, sharing )
& my family went a little overboard with engagements gifts, only his parents & Godmother gave us engagement gifts.

My family always goes overboard with gifts though. They like to shop I guess. It is funny, b/c when it came down to cash, it was pretty much even, but when we talking things, my family spent more. Crazy shopaholics!

My family, no doubt!

Let's see, should I mention my SIL who gave us a $20 gift card to Home Depot and wooden picture frame that she glued flowers and ribbons on? Yes, that was the whole wedding gift. Or should I mention MIL and FIL, who gave us a cash gift and told us that it was the same amount they gave SIL when she got married, *minus* the amount they spent on traveling to get here! (they're from out of town) Unbelievable.

Re: Incredibly shallow poll about gifts...

At the shower, many women from his side did not purchase registry items...and they were HUGE things that I had to return because we had NO SPACE...

So, it seems like we got most of our 'stuff' from my family.

Our aunts and uncles gave similar wedding gift amounts, but he has a much bigger family. So, more of our 'total' gift money came from his side because it's a larger family. My cousins were more generous than his cousins- but he has more cousins, so it still looks like equal amounts.

And, we each had one 'less than generous' couple.

So, for us, things really equaled out. Literally! He had a no show- and I had a crasher.

It was about even in the grand spectrum. Where my family lacked his family made up for it and vice versa!!

his was..mainly because I have a small small family and my Mom paid for a LOT of our wedding. His family such as aunts and uncles gave us generous gifts.

His family by far for both the wedding & shower. My family was very generous with us, its just that DH's side was overly generous

Re: Incredibly shallow poll about gifts...

As far as who gave what, both sides were equal in their generosity. But the sad fact was that DH didn't have much family at the wedding because so many live in Poland and so the majority of the gifts came from my side. As well as the fact that my relatives who couldn't come, sent checks or gifts, DH's relatives did not.

Although his brother gave us a VERY generous gift that stood out compared to all of the others, so I won't complain.

Oh I have to say though out of everyone on my side who could not attend almost every single person still sent a gift. On his side only 1 couple who didnt attend actually sent a gift.
Some of the people who sent gifts and DIDNT come were more generous then people who actually attended.
