Incredibly shallow poll about gifts...

Original post by JimmysBride

I know this is bad but it came to me because my discussing about TYs and wedding gifts with DH (see other post).

So who's family was more generous with the wedding gifts - total including shower gifts, etc?

My family in regards to both wedding & bridal shower. None of his family even came to the shower only because I had never met any of them. I am sure they would have been just as uncomfortable being there as I would have been having them there. Meeting them for the first time at my shower.... Not a good idea.

We are Irish -- known for being very tight-fisted and my family definitely promotes this sterotype. Half of them are totally out of touch with a NY wedding ($100 frame from my oldest brother, wife and 3 (yes 3) kids), and they thought that besides, a second wedding didn't really even merit a gift. And NOBODY in my family used the registry - I got stuff I do not need nor like.

His family on the other hand was extremely generous (Italian) and stuck to the registry for the bridal shower. This is his second time around too, but they are much more generous than my family -- oh and half of them live out of state too...

PS - Don't any Irish lasses get your dander up, it's just a stereotype that in MY case is true!

OMG, this is soooo true! DH's family is English, from England, and they don't really do gifts here very much.

My family is Italian and was much, much more generous by far!

Actually, it continues after the marriage as well. My mom and I were talking the other day and they may be selling my grandmother's house, for which my parents would get a third. My mom's already told me she's giving my brother and I a very generous amount. DH's mother inherited some money and a house which she promptly sold and didn't give him a cent. Not that I expect it, and, hey, it's her money to do what she wants with it...it's just that our families are very, very different. My grandmother inherited some money a few years ago and she couldn't stop giving it away! After a while it was like Nan! stop! You'll have nothing left!!!

I think it was pretty even at the wedding, excluding his uncle that gave us a bonzai tree he is keeping in his yard for us.

Omg- are you serious??

I am laughing so hard about the Irish comments it is soooo true.

I remember my Italian friend's parents sold their house and gave each of the three girls a cut, and I told my mother and she was like what do you mean? why would they do that? How old are these girls that they need this money? Totally clueless

He has a bigger family, so it is hard to gauge. The 2 largest gifts cam from my family, but the biggest percentage from all the gifts combined came from his. (But the most 'stiffers' came from his as well)
