I have NO MONEY to take my dog to the vet. But some of the thick, black stuff on one of her paw pads is ripped off. I tried to put neosporin on it but she just licks it off. I also give her doggy aspirin (she is always getting her nails stuck on things and then they break, so I invested in some aspirin for her). Does anyone know if this is bad??? Do I need to take her to the vet?? (pleaseeeee no)

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
I would call the vet and ask them. Maybe they have a sample of something that they can give you to put on it. Is she acting like she's in a lot of pain? Poor doggy!

oh no poor baby...is she limping or showing pain from it?
maybe just some cream on it and then bandage it so she cant lick it off?

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
This happened to my parents doggie like out of nowhere. We thought maybe it got irritated while he was running with my sister but not sure. My mom said it looked terrible and he grew new pads over the raw ones that peeled. He was ok, I think she tried to bandage it but he ate it off. Maybe just call the vet to see what they say to be safe?

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
Eh, if I call them, they will say, bring her in She isn't limping, she is just licking it a lot - and if I go near it, she flinches and she licks her lips a lot, which she does when something is bothering her -- I've seen it before. But otherwise she seems ok - not complaining, sleeping well (she sleeps A LOT and it doesn't seem to have disturbed her pattern) and she even runs in the backyard - so I guess she is ok.
Jenna, good to hear your mom's dog's pad grew back. I have no idea how this happened!!!!

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
I know you just said you are starting a new job (congrats btw!) but maybe if you call the vet mention that due to being out of work you can't afford to bring your dog in (which is true) and ask the Q... they may either just give you advice of what to do over the phone or maybe reduce the fee if they still make you go in.. worth a shot... and you can charge the fee and pay it after paychecks start coming back in..
poor doggie, that has to hurt.. good luck!

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
something similar happened to our dog witht he pad of his paw and her ripped his nail off all the way to the bottom, they told us to neosporan (sp?) on it and to keep a baby sock over it to help keep dirt out of it. and help with infections
at one time a can of beans fell on my doggy's paw (no money at the time) my dad wrapped a tonsil stick (sorry forgot what it's called-dr. puts it in your mouth and wrapped a bandage and she was all better in less than a week. Maybe try doing the same thing and wrapping it up so that your doggy doesn't mess with it. If your doggy isn't crying (whimpering) than I am sure she/he is not in pain and you can skip the vet.

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
Also, a good bandage to use is an ace bandage, b/c its flexible. I've used that on my dog's injuries in the past.

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
If the dog keeps trying to lick at the paw, you can pick up one of those clown collar things. As much as the dogs hate it, it does keep them from further injuring themselves and will give the boo boo time to heal.
WOW!!! That looks awesome!!! My dog would chew off any bandages - I am going to try a little baby sock or something though today after I get some spray-on neosporin (I don't have to touch it then and she might let me keep it on) ... but I may order this stuff just for the future!

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
those paw things look great! may just order some just to have them for emergencies! ...be careful about the baby sock thing though...make SURE there is no bloody residue of any kind - u dont want it sticking & then re-ripping open the wound! much love to ur baby though..keep us updated!

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
How bad is the rip? Is it more of an abrasion or was there a puncture? What I have done in the past is to clean the wound with peroxide to kill infection, and apply bacitrian. Then put a baby sock on that paw. If the dog won't keep it on just try to have them keep in on for at least a 1/2 so it can soak in. Has there been any bleeding?
FM me if you need more information.
Let her lick it dogs are great a healing themselves. Just not after you apply an oitment,

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
One of my dogs was doing this a few weeks ago. It is not unusual for your dog's pads to get hot/itchy. Sometimes it is from the salt in the winter, or sand, or just being dry. My dog bit off her two front pads and I tried the satellite dish and then cleaning them, putting neosporin, and covering with a sock but the second I took the dish off she was right back at it. Eventually once she bit the pads both off she just let them heal on their own. They never bled and she never limped so I just let her be. Her pads grew back, no infection, and she is perfectly fine. HTH I know how sad it can be but I'm pretty sure that everything will be fine - just make sure that he/she didn't step in/on anything.

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
I would try cleaning it and applying neosporin for a few days and keep an eye on it. If it doesn't start to get better in a few days I would call the vet.
Maybe he wants his paws to smell like fritos too hahaha!

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
buddy had this and what we ended up doing was putting his shoe on it so he doesnt lick it and get it infected. I would just bandage it up and if you have shoes put them on so it keeps the wound clean.
I would also call your vet and see if you have to bring your pup in. I hope your pup feels better

Re: Issue with my dog's paw
Thanks girls!!! You are all so worried about her, it's adorable!!! She is ok. Licking it a lot and it's hard to get her to not lick the neosporin off, but I got the spray stuff and will try that now. No bleeding. No limping.
I had those little booties once - I had 4 of them by muttluks. She lost one and I may have thrown the other three out - I got them so she wouldn't track mud into my house and I think she lost one in the backyard, running like a maniac. She walked soooo funny in them, it was hysterical. I will look for one so I can put it on top of the bandage stuff I bought at target today.
THANKS AGAIN! You girls are so sweet! Dutchess appreciates the lovin!
