I need some advice; I want to apply for a position in another department here at my job. Now, the girl in HR told me that I should let my boss know that I'm applying to that position (she said its totally up to me if I wanted to do that), but what if I tell my Boss and I don’t get the position and then my boss will think im not serious about this job or that I want to leave.
Do you think I should wait until I get an interview or a response that I got the position?

Well if it's a step up, then your boss should be supportive. Is that the situation? You should just say you really enjoy your job but there is an opportunity in X department that you would like to apply to.

Is it a higher position than what you have now? If so, Im sure your boss will understand you want to move up in the company.

It is a little bit, I just want to get out of my dept and move on, try something new and different. This new position would give me better opportunity in the future.

Would it be a promotion, more responsibility? If it is then you can tell your boss your looking to take the next step up and you would like to be considered and didnt want to go over his head.
That is perfectly understandable. If you dont tell him he may think that you are looking to move on (find a new job) so I would definitely run it by him first.

I think you should tell your boss. What I know about this place, people are babies and if they find out last minute or from someone else, they'll treat you worse than if you applied and didnt get it. Email me or come see me if you want to talk

are they the type of boss you can have a few minutes to discus it with? Explain that while you are happy where you are, you feel its a good opportunity you wouldn't want to pass on.
