so I just started this job this week and I'm getting a pay check on Tuesday. I get paid hourly and my boss has not asked me to filled out a tax form (w2?) or anything. He said he is just going to add up my hours and write me a check. Do you think that means hes not taking taxes out? I have never not filled out paperwork for a job before. But this is also a place where I'm the only one that works here. Thoughts?

You're still going to have to report it and pay taxes on your income when you do your taxes. It might be worth talking to him about it so you can plan your personal withholdings so you don't end up having to pay a ridiculous amount come next April.

Sounds like off the books to me. or maybe he will give you a 1099 at the end of the year & say you are a consultant. Either way you should still be reporting it at the end of the year. You should speak to him about it though. The last thing you want is to pick hit with a big tax bill in April.

It does sound like off the books. I would talk to him to make sure he is or isn't going to give you a 1099 at the end of the year for 2 reasons:
1-If he is not reporting your salary to IRS then he is not paying taxes on you and if you file then you could get him in trouble
2-If he is going to give you a 1099 at the end of the year then you may want to start up a savings account for the amount you will have to pay at the end of the year.

Since he is writing you a check, you need to report it b/c the IRS will find out eventually. If he pays you cash, you can get away (most likely) with not reporting it.

LOL Id like to know who actually does this....
ETA: If he's paying you by check, and you're depositing to your bank acct, then you're leaving yourself a nice paper trail... so def find out what your boss plans on doing so either of you dont get screwed in the end
