DH and I were discussing this and I told him I would ask here because he doesn't believe me that some people still have their own checking accounts after they get married. Am I crazy?
I'm not saying to only have separate accounts, but I was considering leaving my current one open just to have a little money for XMAS gifts, etc. that he doesn't know about.
He said that 'we are married and that a joint checking account is what married people do!' lol..I love him for his stubborness!!
We've been together for 10 years and have shared money and acted married for much of that time so I'm just having a difficult time wrapping my head around a new $ situation..not opposed to it, tho.

I have mine. He has his. We have ours.
We are combining slowly but the accounts and investments I held before marriage will stay as they are. Mom always said a woman should have things that are her own.

The solution that we came up with (which works really well for us) is this:
Note - all accounts are 'joint' with both of our names:
1) Main joint account - pay household bills, etc. 2) DH's account - although both of our names are on this account, it's technically 'his' account and contains a certain amount from each paycheck that's his to spend however he wants, with no question from me. 3) My account - same idea as DH's.
This is good because we have access to each other account information in an emergency but we really respect the whole idea that the 'individual' accounts are for things that we want to buy (like the $200 blowdryer from Sephora that I HAD to have! ).

we have three accts. also, his, mine and ours. we pay bills from ours and pay for trips, house stuff, etc. we each put money into savings, the scraps leftover go into our own accts.

We have soooo many accounts! We each have our own individual checking and savings, mostly because we both use direct deposit and never carry cash and live by our debit cards. It is easier to know how much is in there when using the debit card as an individual account. We also have a joint checking that we use for our mortgage and bills and home improvements. Then we have 2 joint savings. One at the local bank and one through ING.com. Even though we have our own checking accounts, we transfer 80-90% of our money each month into the joint account. Our individual accounts and basically for spending money.

We share all accounts. We have one joint checking account. And then a few different Savings accounts, all in both our names.
We both have our direct deposit go partially in savings and the rest in checking

We have individual checking accts (although they technically both have us as signers only one of us uses each) and one joint savings.
I could never balance a checkbook with the way this man uses his debit card....a pack of gum.95cents, lunch $5.04, etc......

We both have our own checking and savings accounts, as well as a joint checking account. After we figure out housing, we will combine the savings accounts into one joint account.

Actually, the minute we got engaged and began to receive gifts we each closed our own and went joint. Then before the wedding we also did joint savings....all I had to do after the wedding was change my name on the accounts. For gifts and surprise gifts, I just use my credit card...I have a credit card and we both have linked Amex accounts.
