We just have a joint account......it's easier for mortgage/bills/groceries etc.....plus I don't care if he sees if I went shopping...I tell him all the time that I just NEEDED a new bag...or I needed a new shirt...lol although lately it's been.....'we have a whole house to decorate.....'

we have a joint account...BUT i also have a separate ING savings account and DH has an MCU savings account.

maybe my mom is old school---but she always taught me to have a 'little bit of money on the side', just in case.

OMG! I was just going to start a thread about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have a joint checking account for all of our bills, mortgage, etc. We also have a joint savings account, where we save.
And, we each have our own separate checking accounts. After 30 some odd years of having my own money, I need to have my own independent checking account.

Just curious....with 2 people using it at the same time, how do you keep track of how much is in there.....what if you bounce something? Or, do you just keep enough in there at all times so that there is a very large cushion?

We have a joint checking for bills and a joint savings.....but we each have our own accounts too. I actually have a savings account from when i was young that i never touch unless we need it and i have a checking/savings account on my own. DH is the only one that withdraws, pays bills with the joint. I have access just choose not to use it cause i don't want to bounce anything. I get my paycheck every month and transfer funds to OUR account and the rest of the money stays in my account for my bills and spending.

We have joint accounts on pretty much all our accounts. However, we each have our own checking accounts with extra money for ourselves and presents and whatnot, then we have the main account which is where both of our paychecks get depositied and we also use it to pay all our bills.

We have a joint account that we opened with the wedding money and we both kept our individual accounts.

we have individual checking and a joint savings (in the same bank) so we just transfer the money into savings for bills etc etc

since both DH and i put our paychecks in our joint account--there's usually a decent cushion. but if one of us spends money, we tell the other--and we keep track of alllllll fiannces in our Quicken program. (well i should say that I keep track of it)

DH will call and say 'babe i'm gonna put gas in the car, there's enough in the bank for that and me to take out money without going too low, right?' it works out this way best for us.

We balance it....it's easier with on-line banking. & there's always 'enough' (haha) in there, I would never bounce anything, I check it everyday. I keep track of my bills & spending.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??

we have joint savings, joint checking, and each have separate savings
all the accounts are linked to eachother as well as set up for online banking.
we can easily move money around to each account so we should hopefully not have a problem overdrawing.
We just set it up recently and we hope to give ourselves an allowance as well as save money and pay bills.

that's the plan.. hope it works!

We have both. I think it basically depends on the couple. For us, the separate & the joint works out. We opened the joint when we were saving for the wedding. Now we each of our own money that we spend & then our savings together which consists of paying the house bills.

We have 2 joint accounts, savings and checking. Our money is all the same so it just goes together!! I keep the checkbook and take care of balancing it, DH just lets me know when he takes $$ out of the ATM or pays bills. And we both check the accounts online so we know how much we have.
