Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
We each have a personal checking account, and we have a joint checking and a joint savings account. We like having our personal checking so when I want to buy a handbag or something it's my own money. Also that is where the money came from to surprise DH with an anniversary trip.

We just have a joint account......it's easier for mortgage/bills/groceries etc.....plus I don't care if he sees if I went shopping...I tell him all the time that I just NEEDED a new bag...or I needed a new shirt...lol although lately it's been.....'we have a whole house to decorate.....'
same here and it isn't a problem what so ever.

we have a joint account...BUT i also have a separate ING savings account and DH has an MCU savings account.
maybe my mom is old school---but she always taught me to have a 'little bit of money on the side', just in case.
Your mom and my mom say the same exact thing!!! We have both as well!

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
We're having both--each have an individual, my husband has a business account, and then we have a joint checking & savings accounts.
I don't think there's a 'should' there--each couple is different, and they 'should' do what is best for them. That said, it's always a good thing for an adult woman to have her own bank account, for emergencies, for credit reasons, etc.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
we have joint checking and savings -- i dont really need an individual account because if I want to go shopping or something I just tell him I'm doing it and take the money from our account. Its no biggie.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
We have has a Joint Bank Account since we moved in together 3 1/2 years ago.
I Handle All the Bills. We get Direct Deposit at work. So that makes it easy.
It kinda stinks b/c if he wants to surprise me with something & he doesn't use cash, I can find out the cost of it. I try not to look at the bill for that month, but I want to make sure of the charges. So that stinks.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
We only have separate accounts and that's worked well for us all these years. But now that we're married, we're thinking of getting joint accounts too.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
we have money in all different places
he has checking / savings, I have checking / savings, we have a joint checking / savings, and we're about to open a joint money market acct
pretty much all bills are paid from our personal accounts (we each pay a portion of every month's bills), and the joint just sits there....... so it's easy to keep track of that acct.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
You should do whatever you think is best for both of you. To be honest sometimes it just doesn't work out for some people to have joint bank accounts! DH and I have a joint account and sometimes it really stinks because he is a nazi with the money. I used to have A LOT more freedom with my own account! XOXOXO Kitty

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
DH swipes his debit till it doesn't work and then wonders why so he has his own that I put money in for him.
All of our accounts are joint. But thats mainly because I manage the money (gee I wonder why ) and its easier to do that way.

Re: Joint or separate bank accounts??
We have a joint checking for bills, groceries, vacations, home things blah blah blah. I am much better with money so eventhough it's joint i'm the only one with a debit card to that account and he takes the checkbook for whatever. I am the only one who does any of tha balancing. We each have our own sep checking/savings accounts for whatever. We each have $300 from our checks deposited automatic into our own account, and if we work overtime we deposit that into our own personal account. Other than that the rest goes into the 'family' account. I also like a bit of saving in there so it's not bad in case of emergencies. It's not about hiding or not trusting, but I like having my own things too, and if I want to spend $500 on new clothes then so what. it's easier to not feel guilty if it's from my own account and not the 'family' account.
