Kind of a morbid question..

Original post by Leelee

DH and I were at a wake last night for a family member and we started talking about at which point do you create your will, purchase cemetary plots, etc.?
We thought perhaps it varied-like if you had children, a house...
Has anyone taken care of this stuff yet?
Sorry for the downer question...the woman who passed away was quite young and it got me thinking it's better to be prepared.

Most companies offer free or low-cost life insurance to their employees- so Stef you might have some and not even know.
I also agree about LTD insurance. That is VERY important. I get mine through my employeer and it will begin to cover 75% of my paycheck after 10 weeks of disability.

Life insurance is also used to cover funeral expensives, which is NOT an inexpensive thing. It is also A LOT cheaper to get life insurance in your early 20's. You can get a term policy for very little now and it will protect you for 20-30 years.

Nothing in writing yet, though DH knows (as well as my mom) that under no circumstances should I be buried. AL my organs and whatnot I want to be donated, either to someone who needs it or to medical research and whatever is left, cremation!!!
Having my organs and body go to science and to those that need it is very important to me. I have the organ donation card in my wallet but will definitely have that put in a will when we do draw one up after kids.

Michele: You're right, I do have life insurance. Something like $50K if I keel over but I wouldnt pay for it. Since Lukes job is a bit different, he has a lot more coverage for that sort of thing. Reassuring to know that his employer has a definitive schedule of how much he gets if he loses a finger, two fingers, an arm below the elbow and on and on :D

Even if you think everything will go to your husband, your family may contest it, since you did not have a will.

I am still trying to get my parents to get a will.

I think it is very important to have one when you have children.

Also if you die together, then who will get your assets? Becaseu Your family and his family are entitled to your stuff.
