I'm hoping to settle the debate of which is best, and hopefully get one by the end of the year.
Who has which one, and what do you like and not like about it?
There seems to be pros and cons for both. The big pro of the Kindle (Amazon) is that it seems the books are cheapest. The cons are the keypad, it's expensive, and you can't borrow books from the library.
The Nook (Barnes and Noble) the pros are it's a touch screen, you can borrow from the library, and share books with other users. Also shows book covers in thumbnail format in the library, can play games (though I don't care that much about that), and has wifi. Cons are the books are more expensive and the unit itself is really expensive.
The Kobo (Borders) the pros are that it's the least expensive unit, only $150.00. I also like that the cover of the book you're currently reading stays on the front screen, whether it is on or not. The cons are the books are more expensive than Kindle books (but same price as Nook), I can't find any information if you can borrow from the library with it, and there is a navigation button, better than the keypad, but not as convenient as a touch screen.
I think I'm narrowing it down between the Nook and the Kobo...it's all a matter of if I really want to spend 100 more for the Nook, but it might balance out since I plan on doing mainly library borrowing than purchasing books.
Any insight would be appreciated!

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
I'm a kindle gal. It my most favorite thing that DH has ever bought me (shhh - don't tell him that I think I like it even more than my e-ring!)
Pros for the Kindle:
1. Books from Amazon are relatively cheap. They also have TONS of free books. 2. After looking at the Nook and the Kindle, the Kindle screen is actually easier to read. It's very 'soft' on your eyes. 3. Super-quick downloads. I mean, really quick. Like 30 seconds for a book. 4. Battery lasts forever 5. 'page turning' is super quick and seamless.
Cons for the Kindle: 1. No light. You have to get a portable reading light. It's not backlit which makes it easy to read but for reading in bed I use a book light that fits neatly in my kindle case. 2. You can't share books. However, my sister has one and we will swap kindles for a week or so if she has something i want to read.
I've looked into the Nook (thought about getting it for DH so we have one of each). While I like the color screen, it's much slower to turn pages and the battery doesn't last as long. The 'borrow' and 'library' feature is very cool though.
FYI - I don't think the Kindle keyboard is awkward at all.

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
i just wanted to let you know, it is very difficult to borrow ebooks from the library. the selection is poor, and even when you do find a book, there is only one 'copy' of them, so its difficult.
but i have the sony ereader, and i heart it!

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
I am madly in love with my Kindle ....
don't know anything about the other ones but i got my kindle years ago when i first came out so there are some kinks, like it takes a second or two to move to the next page and the buttons for next page and previous page aren't in the most convenient spots, but i hear they fixed all this stuff in the latest kindle version. i also hear that the new kindles can download books when u are out of the country.... umm jealous! despite the small inconveniences, dh always jokes that if he and my kindle were both drowning i would probably rescue the kindle if you love reading, i would highly recommend!

No you can't unless you have a library card you need to enter your library card number and pin to download them.

I can get a NYPL library card!!! I just read on the NYPL website that as long as I am a NYS resident, I can apply in person! And I am going to the city on Saturday to get waxed, so I can do it then and borrow the millions of ebooks that are available!

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
Kindle Kindle Kindle!!!!!
IMO, they had the best selection of books, and the prices are great. Me lovey! The touch screen on the nook actually turns me off; it's my biggest peeve with the iPhone.
Though it's a little outdated now, I bought DH the Sony E-reader years ago and he still loves it. He's now thinking of getting the iPad once the 3G version is available, which has a kindle application, plus the books from iStore.

I agree.....I have pretty small hands and then nook fits perfectly but in no way is it small.
I was flying home last night and the woman next to me had the kindle and her screen was tiny compared to my nook.
I dont think you will have a problem finding a book with the nook and you can read any book for free in a B & N store so if you feel like gettiing out for a bit you can go there and read and have coffee and the book is free in store.

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
Thanks everyone...I don't plan on making any purchases right now, so by the time I'm ready the Kobo will already be out (mid-June), and I'll be able to get more feedback on that, i.e. if it supports library borrowing, sharing files, reading in store, etc. If the nook fits in small hands well, that might be another pro for me, I have pretty small hands and thin fingers for a big girl lol. And I have 2 B&N in both my 'hometowns' that I can chill in, even though I like Border's better as a general rule. Ahhh, decisions.
And I guess I'll have to take a trip in to the city to get a library card haha.

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
Hi there. I bought my husband a Sony Ereader Touch Edition (PRS 600 )for X-mas. He loves borrow books from the public library He is able to borrow books for about 2 weeks. The one problem I found is that there can be glare and you would have to but a light so that you can read in dim light or the dark. Once I bought my husband the book cover with the light he loves it. Go to sony.com and check it out.
I just got the Nook yesturday for my birthday, I love it! not really a full touch screen Hope this was helpful! Good Luck & Enjoy

Re: Kindle/Nook/Kobo
crashing..i have the kindle and it is the best purchase i have ever made. i read so much that it would probably be considered an addiction. the keyboard isn't awkward at all, and honestly, you really do not use it that much. the only issue i am having lately is that since the ipad came out, amazon has been having publisher disputes and a lot of the books that i like to read have not been available on the kindle. other then that i love it!
