Kitchen Remodelling Question

Original post by Sonicstef

Ok, since I have had the longest week at work and i dont feel like doing another **** thing...here is my kitchen remodel question.

My husband finally found a contractor that seems reputable, will work in Brooklyn, has references and is not a jerk. (or at least thats how it looks now). He spoke to him about re-doing our kitchen and the guy told him that his best bet is to get a designer to do the layout so we can maximize space, etc...,etc..

Is this Bs? I mean, it strikes me as something the contractor should be able to do for us, right?

THe contractor gave us the names of a few designers, so i dont think he directly profits from that.

Anyone have a clue about this?

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

Here's a close up of the island. Actually, when we bought the house, there was a wall there and my dinnette was a small dining room. We opened the wall, put the island in (which I love) and made the other room a dinnette.

And here's a pic of the dinnette. I got the wood blinds .. but I'm disputing the color, so don't mind the extra long rod. Also, I haven't decorated my house yet, so it's still a bit bare.

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

Thanks Christine and Anna ... . That means so much coming from you guys! Not the biggest kitchen but it's cozy for us right now.

Anna .. yes, that's granite but it's more like a peach, gray, and specks of burgandy (which probably look black) on my countertops and the back splash. My kitchen is peach, so it blends so nicely.

Stef ... I hope it was somewhat helpful. I should show you the before pics ... the horror!!

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

Cira I love your kitchen to especially your marble countertop! Very pretty!

I wanted to add that I once got a price quote from Sears Home Refacing for my kitchen cabinets. The quote they gave us includes an architect coming to the house to do the design. I never followed through b/c then we decided to move but it seemed to be an all-inclusive price.

Cira - great job! I want to see more - you should definitely show the befores. I also want to see more of your work. It looks so terrific. I should have you and Rob come to my home and give me ideas -I am so clueless. I want an island so bad. Dh says we can do it but I would no clue where or how. Thanks for sharing your work!

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

Thanks again ladies!

Hey Denise ... I'm sure you can put an island in. We have a small kitchen and were able to put one in. I'd be happy to offer some advice ... anytime. Rob and I will just take a ride over. Or you can come over anytime! We have two stools under the island and the cabinet space is fabulous - I'd totally recommend it. The house is still not done, but I'll see what I can post for you. The befores, you are going to laugh ... it was just horrible and I know that your house is in much much much better condition.

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

cira- I am not comparing conditions - : ) I love before and afters and I am so impressed with Rob's skill levels. Lou and I are no where even close to that and had to buy something in decent condition (but as time goes on you realize all the hidden things that are not in as good condition as you originally thought). I think it is so awesome that you are doing the work and it look fabulous so far! When I do my windows over I will give you the before and after - if you see how old and gross my back window is - horrible. My friends saw it this weekend and could not believe it. I can't wait for an after picture of it! I hate looking at it! I can't even open the cranks either.

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

I should show you my windows. We replaced them on the first floor only. We didn't get Anderson since we don't intend to stay there, but Jasco. We got a slider for our back window, which is really cool - it's actually the window in the dinette, but there is not pic of it. The other window in the dinette where the rod is to long ... that's actually the original window but painted. You can't see it with the blinds, but it looks great. I can't open it because it's fixed, but it complements the room.

We are in the process of pricing a bay window for the front. Gosh, it's so expensive, but that will really make the house look great. Add some landscaping and we are in business.

We want to do the roof too. But decided to go with the bay first. We have to rip the old roof and get an entire new one ... can't layer it.

You have to see my basement ... entirely gutted! We didn't expect that, but you don't realize everything until you move in. Whenever you want to come over, let me know!

I'll tell Rob what you said ... I'm pretty impressed with him too. He's so proud to show off his work.

I'll dig up some of the before's and post them!

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

Cira: I really like your back door. Do you remember where you got it from?

Re: Kitchen Remodelling Question

Fran: The granite is called Shivikashi (I hope the spelling is right).

Stef: We got the door from Rob's friend. He put a sliding door in his house and gave us that one, since it was relatively new. He got it at Home Depot.
