Ladies who have moved with Pets

DH and I just moved into our new apt this weekend and our doggy is pretty freaked out by it. She was really going nuts with the packing and actual move...but now we are in and mostly unpacked she just seems sad and lays in the corner of the couch all the time.

Any advice on how you ladies handled this?

Re: Ladies who have moved with Pets

your dog will get used to it, it's just a lot of new smells and noises! take her out on long walks to explore the new part of town, and keep treats with you! we just moved, and our new place is right next to a woman that has outdoor cats...my dog barks his head off and gets so excited anytime he even senses a cat, so he's still getting used to that. whenever he looks out the window and doesn't bark, i've been rewarding him with treats. it seems to be working pretty well! HTH somewhat!

Re: Ladies who have moved with Pets

its really important to maintain her regular schedule and make the apt. as homey and comfy as possible (like get rid of boxes, etc). i also would take her for more walks, go to the park etc to get her energy back up. im so sad to hear that she is sad!!!!!!

eta. i forgot to say that joey's moved around a bunch since he was 1 and he always gets used to the place after a bit. as long as he's got his bed, he's good to go anywhere!!

yeah we have really been working hard to get everything unpacked as quickly as possible bc we want her to be more comfortable.

definitely taking her out more is a good idea...

thanks ladies!

Re: Ladies who have moved with Pets

I dunno if this helps but when DH moved here he moved his cat too...the cat was really freaked out for a couple of days and then as things started to settle in so did he. We found out he was much happier if he had access to a window to sit in so we bought him a perch that he loves now.

my shih tzu wasnt effected at all.. he's happy anywhere lol

Re: Ladies who have moved with Pets

I def think she just needs some time to adjust!. My dog was the same way.... I really thought he was depressed! It was much better once we were 'really' settled in...not just clearing out boxes but also developed a routine and felt like this really is our home. I think a lot of it too was that we werent playing with him as much since we were so busy with cleaning and organizing the apt, so I think its def. important to set aside time for that everyday and make the home feel fun. HTH and GL!

Re: Ladies who have moved with Pets

Clover was very upset when I moved her to our apartment. She meowed like she was in a meowing contest or something. Non stop. She also hid in our spare room. It took a while but she finally started coming out and socializing. What helped was putting her 'stuff' in all different places around the apartment, so she could recognize the smell.

This.

And if you're gone for awhile, leave stuff around that's familiar to them from their last home and maybe even stuff that smells like you (so long as they won't pee on it) like a blanket from your bed.

My dogs and cats took a little while to adjust, too. Don't worry!

Re: Ladies who have moved with Pets

My cat was like this when we moved the first time. She hid and was just scared of everything. she was also depressed.

Give it a few weeks... they come around. I promise!! It seems terrible to watch them like that ... but eventually they get used to the new place and get back to normal.
