Leaving NY???

Original post by kitty1224

If you had an opputunity in 2 years to leave and have DH keep his NY salary would you leave your family so you can start a family in another state or would you stay in NY, we all know LI is really expensive and how it is so hard to live off of one persons salary. Advice please

We did! DH is in the army, so its a little different (we didnt have a choice in the matter)...but we picked up and moved to Georgia and we'll be moving again next year to NC. Honestly, I miss my friends in NY, but other than that, I love it! Everyone seems to think that NY is like the Mecca of the world....but in reality, there are MUCH nicer and more affordable places to live than NY. But we dont have kids yet and when we do, we'll probably move back to the tri-state area so they can be closer to the family.

We did. We now live in Albany. So while we are still in NY, we are upstate now. So far, it is okay. I like that DH and I get a lot of quality weekend time together, but I still wish I was closer to my family and friends. I am super close to all of them and living up here has been a huge adjustment. If my family and friends were here, I would really like it.

I think if either one of us got our NY salary somewhere else, we would go. The problem is, if I want to continue practicing law, I'd have to take another bar exam or wait a few more years until I can waive into certain jurisdictions... Or practice in DC where I'll be admitted soon..

Maybe, that is a hard one, my mom wants usto relocate to CT (she lives up there) but MILis here on LI and my dad is moving to FLA. So family is all over the place. If it is the best thing for your family then yes! My beleif is that if your family will flourish and have a better opportunity for what you want for them, then Yes.
I personally am not sure how I would do in a new town, the friendships DH and I have are like family. It would be hard for me to leave. But that is me.

We would but only if it was out of the country. DH has the ability to move just about anywhere with his job and we have been throwing London around. Not for good but for a few years it would be wonderful

Re: Leaving NY???

def. move! you can easily live in the tri-state area.
I now live in NJ and plan to buy there too. I commute two hours to NY by train but it is such an easy commute. i either read or sleep and i get to come home to a beautiful town - and it's 5 blocks from the beach.

NY prices are crazy. you can get a lot more for your money in a neighboring state.
We can easily buy a beautiful home for $300,000 here as opposed to a 2x4 in NY for double the price.

That's exactly what I did 2 years ago I got up and moved with my then FH to FL and got a job that pays more than my NY job did. He also got a job that paid alittle more too. We could not live on LI any longer due to the high taxes and the interest rate going up. We couldn't even find an apt that had good rent. I was broke every month and in FL where I live now I am not broke I actually have extra money. We pay a mortgage on our 3 bed/2 bath house $600 a month instead of $1700 that I was paying with my mom. My mom ended up selling and moving here too because she couldn't afford it. NY is really ridiculous with everything it is a shame.

Plus we were tired shoveling snow it was awful.

Re: Leaving NY???

honestly, i would def leave NY if i knew DH could keep his salary. its easier for me cause i really only have my mom and dad locally - but DH has bros and sisters that are still high school aged and he is very close with them so it would prob be harder for him to move away. although we have always said that when the time is right we want to do it because of the cost of living and the houses and land are so much better elsewhere. good luck!
