Mammograms

Mammograms

At what age is the 'right' time to start getting these done? My doctor hasn't said anything to me about it yet and breast cancer does not run in my family. I turn 30 this year and thought my first should be coming up soon, right?

Unless you had a family history, or there is a specific issue, a baseline is done at 35 and every year from 40 on.

Me either, I have no boobs! I don't know how they're going to smash them

I don't know which is worse, big boobs or no boobs.

I lay on my boobs sometimes and it's painful, I can't imagine something squishing it like that! lol

I heard it's just as uncomfortable with large as well as no boobs..

One tech told me sometimes larger breasts are harder to get a good image b/c of all the tissue which is why you have to wait so long for them to check the films before you can get dressed and leave. I am always called back in for another image, it's adds to my anxiety but now that's its happened a few times I am used to it.

Re: Mammograms

I just had one done last week (I had a little scare, but Thank god it was nothing) the doctor had told me that they usually start doing monograms at around 30ish... they are starting earlier just for precaution, but every gyno is different.

I was sooo scared when I had it done b/c I have heard about the pain. It does hurt, but thankfully, it is only a brief pain. I think the anticipation is worse. It is painful, but like I said it is brief.

I have been going for sonos since 25. THey usually send you for sonos instead of mammos if your under 40. I definitely think you should start going now, prevention is key. Im actually going for a needle biopsy tonight

I have no boobs, either! I often wonder myself how they plan to accomplish this!

This just reminded me, once on Nip/Tuck one of the surgeons had to get a mammogram to see if he had 'Breast' cancer lol

They actually squeezed him in there!!! So if a guy can get it done, I am guessing a girl, no matter how small, can get it done too.

Gee, I had my annual one this morning.
I've got big dense boobs, so they really have to squeeze them to get a good reading.
It hurts while the machine squeezes, but once that's done so is the discomfort.

I swear this machine had to be invented by a man. A woman would have found a better way.
If a man had to do this to check for testicular cancer, then there DEFINITELY would be a better way.

Me too. I had one and it was painful. But what really annoyed me was the technician who took the films... she told me it wasn't going to be painful. She also told me she never had one done before, so she had some nerve....
