man oh man

man oh man

This may be a bit long, but I am so upset.

It has been SO freaking cold in our apartment lately. I called the landlord last weekend and he said the heat was on 70 and he put it up to 73. I am sitting here right now, with a big heavy sweatshirt on, still freezing. I felt the baseboards in the living room and only half of them are semi warm. This is at night also, when most places are the warmest correct???

So my dilema was this, we just bought our new puppy. We keep him in the hall way near the bathroom and the entrance to the kitchen b/c the door to our room and teh second bedroom (which tends to be warmer than the rest of the house) I figured he would get some of the heat coming from those bedrooms if I left him near that area. It is so cold in this apartment right now, that I went to go fix him his food this morning, and the big jug of liquid vitamins taht I put into his food , was frozen!!! IT was kept under the sink in the kitchen which is right near where he is!
I was so mad. DH keeps telling me it's not cold in here, but *** does it mean when a liquid freezes IN YOUR HOME???? IT's freaking cold in here.

I am not mad at the landlord, he is being very helpful, I just wish it would be fixed now. The poor puppy is left in here all day long so he can roam around and he doesn't even leave his cage. I can't keep him in he bedrooms b/c those aren't that warm anyway right now, and I don't want him to go on the carpet.

Sorry, this is so long, but I am so angry.

So b/c it's so cold in here, he has this little 'Soothing puppy' that you can put in the cage with puppies to make them feel like there is another animal in there. It has a fake little heart beat and it came with these 'warmer' inserts. I ran out of them, but I didn't want him to be cold last night, so I bought those 'hot handz' warmers and stuck one in there. It's basically the same thing.

so this morning I wake up, and what happens?? He has opened the puppy up, and taken the hot handz thing out, and chewed it!!! I started to freak out..I called poison control for animals and they want $60 over the phone for a consultation. I called my vet and they said as long as he didn't throw up he will be fine. the products website says it's non toxic so I figurd he would be fine.

On my way out to work, I smelled something, so I went into his cage and he threw up! So now I am home with him, watching him, had to take off of work. :( I feel bad for him, but if it wasn't so cold in here I wouldn't have had to do that!

Okay, sorry so long..vent over :(

Awww poor puppy!!! That is terrible!!! Our house can be chilly, too, but we have control over our own heat, obviously! Has your landlord come to actually CHECK the baseboards and stuff in your apt? Maybe they are broken?

For you and your puppy!!! Keep us posted!

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Is the problem with your landlord going to get fixed soon? Maybe the thermostat (sp?) is wrong and that's why your apartment is not as warm as it should be. While you are in the house you should get an electric heater so that it can warm up the place by where your puppy is so that he can be kept warm. Try putting blankets or covers by the windows/doors so that the cold air wont get in as much.

So sorry to hear that. I know my dog once ate some rabies vaccine stuff they had put in a park for the raccoons - and I got sooooo worried. I know that feeling of wondering, is that ok for her to eat???

I would imagine that throwing up the stuff would be GOOD for the pup - he's getting rid of it! Cleaning out his system. But watch him, try to get him to drink and take him to the vet tomorrow if he doesn't get better.

Did you call the vet about the frozen stuff in the kitchen???? WOW. He must understand that there is a problem when you tell him that.

Hope it gets fixed soon!!!!!!

Yeah, I didn't add that he did actually eat food and drink water. So I think he only ate a little bit of it.

I called the landlord and left a message on his voicemail and hopefully he will get back to me. I like being home from work b/c I can get so much done, but right now I can't go anywhere b/c I have to watch him. :(

I just may have to get a space heater. I will see if hte landlord calls me back soon, since i am now staying home maybe he can come and do somethin today.

I am going to keep an eye on him and see how he does. Thanks guys :) I will keep you posted.

ohhh that's terrible.

Is your building/house older? I control the heat here in our apt and The thermostat SAYS it's like 74 degrees in here...but it's FREEZING. My dad has to come take a look..he said maybe the thermostat is broken. You should ask the Landlord about that.

Also, my puppu has thrown up a few times...after eating grass, chewing on a wood deck, things like that. puppies have sensitive stomachs..especially if they eat something they aren't used to. If the puppy still doesn't look good...ask the vet about Benadryl..you can give them the human version for when they are allergic to things..we've done it and it helps.

Buy a thermastat in walmart or something and set it up in your apt. Maybe buy a space heater too...but those worry me a bit. Did you tell the landlord you have frozen stuff in our place?

Also so sorry about the puppy...you were just trying to make sure he was warm. What kind of dog is it?

You should buy a snugglesafe for your puppy! I bought one off amazon (sold other places too).. it is a pink disk that you microwave and it stays VERY warm for up to 12 hours. I wanted something that didn't use electric, so this was perfect! I put mine under my dog's blanket in her bed every morning, which is in her crate and when I come home, I always feel her bed and it is always SOOO nice and toasty in there. She loves it!

Disk looks like this (size of a frisbee)

Package looks like this and mine came with a tan fleece cover w/ black pawprints on it

DH and I have the same issue with our land lord. They just refuse to raise the heat up! At least your landlord raises the temp lol. We went out and bought a space heater. Because elecricty is included in our rent, we have it on all the time as long as we are home. Last night it was 61 degrees in my bedroom . That space heater def went to good use!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your puppy! That poor baby!!! He should be okay. He probably just threw up because whatever he ate was indigestible. When my bella was a puppy, she chewed open a box of frontline and was licking the liquid. Well, to make a long story short, she ended up convulsing and I rushed her to an animal hospital. That was 6 years ago so I'd say she's okay lol. Anyway, my brothers dog chewed up his couch and ate all the stuffing inside when he wasn't home. His vet said if he continues to throw up, give him a teaspoon of Maylox (spelling) or something similiar after there is nothing in his throwup. The only reason they throw it up is because the can't digest it, so in a way, it's good that he's getting it out. The vet said to only worry if he can't hold down is food and water. He should be okay!!

That is awesome, thank you for that. I just may have to go and get that this weekend.

1) The baseboard that I felt was cold b/c it was a 'fake' board. It was just there for cosmetic purposes. Which is stupid to me, but w/e.

2) He left the room with the thermostat open for me to adjust the heat as I see fit. When the plumber came and fixed it all, it was so nice and warm, and now it was getting cold again so I raised it up. The puppy should be fine now in the kitchen. The bedrooms are heating up again, so I think all is well.

Thank you guys for everything. :)

Btw, the landlord is sweet as can be, he's not like a slumlord, I just don't want anyone to think that lol I let it go for a day b/c DH said I was crazy, and that it was warm in there... All is well in the land of Puppyness.

Re: man oh man

If it is older home, the lines may have air in it. That happened to us twice so far this winter, with dh telling me nothing was wrong even though it was 50 in the house. the landlord changed something and now the heat and even the hot water is so much better. usually the house gets colder at night because you lose the heat from the sun. I would get a space heater. We use ours to warm up once in awhile. We are in a cottage that doesn't retain heat, it is always cold. I would never leave it on overnight unless there was no heat in the home.
