Re: MIL living with you
Would she have a separate apartment area, or share living spaces like the kitchen? I would not be pleased...I wouldn't let my MIL live on the streets, but I really think that would be a stress on my relationship with DH...

Re: MIL living with you
I voted 'no way' to your poll but honestly, when it comes down to it, she is my DHs family and how could I turn away family - esepcially someone he loves?
But I would def set a time limit - like 'she has 4 months and then get out..' type thing. Luckilly he has 2 other siblings who she could stay with too.

Re: MIL living with you
Dh and I were talking about this. He was thinking out loud about his plans for the house and was going over certain additions possibily being made in the event that MIL would move in - then he went on to mention some overtime he would need to work, etc.
I then told him that he would also need to update our benefit plan, because I would require heavy sedation.
Any clues as to which way I voted?

Re: MIL living with you
My MIL could definitely live with us! But, my FIL is difficult, wonderful, but difficult - neither my DH or me could have him live with us.

Re: MIL living with you
I would let my MIL or my mother but we get along great with both of them. It sounds like she is going to cause a lot of stress for you. I would either say no or give a time limit.

Sounds like a sticky situation. Good luck whatever you decide, it's your DH and your house.

Re: MIL living with you
I get along with my MIL but I'd rather take a 2nd job to pay her rent then come live with us. Besides DH would me more against it then I would.

Re: MIL living with you
I am in a similar situation. MIL is alone and is having trouble affording her house (which is in DHs name). So when we move back to NY we will live with her. Then once we buy a house she will be living with us (in an apt in the basement) and we will rent the house on SI. I don't mind because she is a wonderful woman and does so much for DH and I. Plus, she will be our babysitter so I can return to work.

Re: MIL living with you
I guess I'd have to say for me, yes, I'd let my MIL live with us, esp since she and FIL let us live with them for 6 months. And, luckily, my MIL is wonderful and really we had no major problems - just some aggrivation mostly due to missing our own space. In a case like yours though, I don't know what I'd do - well, actually, I would probably let her live with us just because if I knew she was so hard up, I would feel like we should help. But, it sounds like it could really be hard on you guys, so I guess you have to think long and hard about it. Or, like others have said, make sure you have a time limit - though I don't know how yo tell her to get out later either - and also, make some ground rules (if that's possible.) Good luck!

Re: MIL living with you
I voted no. My MIL is a sweet woman but I can never live with her, she would just meddle. DH has been on his own for the last 11 years, there is no way he would live with her again.

Re: MIL living with you
I do not get along with my MIL so there is no way that I would be able to deal with her living with us. She stayed with us for a week I almost lost my mind.

Re: MIL living with you
I voted no way only becasue I know how my MIL is. She is a lunatic!!
I wrote this in another thread I coppied and pasted it. Just remember when you think you have it really bad she didn't buy a leash.
I have way to much to put... but I can start off With Mikes mother....Who when we got engaged (the day we got engaged went to IN LAWS house) said 'I already paid for my daughter's wedding I dont have to pay for anymore im done paying' Ok THANKS.... By the way she paid for the Reception and my SIL and BIL paid for EVERYTHING else. She doesn't think before she speaks. She hated NY and couldnt live here one more day she NEEDED to move to Florida and live in their condo. So she up and left everyone including her husband (who still lives here cause he can not retire) She wont get a job cause she says no one will hire her because she would want to come here for christmas well last christmas she stayed in Florida She came up for thanksgiving and told everyone we would celebrate Christmas the day after thanksgiving. We all told her She would get her gift mailed to her. We then sent her a card with a gift card in it she said 'why did you get me that I only want Jo-Ann's gift cards cause I don't need anything else' She is the only person I know who calls someone up and says I didnt get a card and a gift from u for my birthday/mothers day. She actually called my dh on her birthday from Florida and said 'I didnt get a gift from you.... What happened to it ' Who does that. Maybe if u lived here and didnt leave ure entire family (including ure husband who sends u 600.00 a month and pays ure bills) you would get the day of ure birthday. For my shower she knows I 'like' purple so she bought me everything purple from the 1.00 store. Like EVERYTHING SHE SAW including a 'leash' you put ure children on even if I had children I wouldn't use it. Mike said Mom do u know what this is and she said 'no but it's purple' THANK YOU JUST SHOWED EVERYONE HOW DUMB U ARE AND NOW THEY BELIEVE ME! BUT my all time favorite is what she pulled at the wedding.
She Said She bought a dress like 4 months before the wedding and told me it was periwinkle ok cool. Doesnt match my mom or my girls. Then 2 months before the wedding she says oh I bought the same dress in Lavander. WHY? I asked her not to wear it because she would match my girls Mike asked her not to wear it. She said fine. SOOOO 2 days before the wedding my SIL calls me and says 'my mom is wearing the dress' I said what she said 'ya I asked her I thought Kristin asked you not to wear the Lavendar dress?' and my wonderful MIL said while laughing 'what is Kristin gonna do make me leave not let me goto the ceremony' I can honestly tell you she ruined our relationship no the way to start off a relationship with a Daughter in Law. Then at the rehersal everyone is lined up at the church the way I want them to walk down the aisle. Grandma and Grandpa walk down then her and her husband. Well I all of a sudden see BIL (who is the first born and gets everything and can do nothing wrong) walking with them. I was like 'why is pete walking with them he is walking with my cousin no one is suppose to see him until then' She turns around and says 'cause she needs 2 escorts' UM Y she can walk fine. I was like No she doesnt and she gave me a nasty look and rolled her eyes listen B*tch you didnt pay its my day and its my way! Then she said well where does ure mother go. I said 'my mother and father are walking me down 'WELL she had a fit. 'she cant walk you down the aisle' I SAID ' EXCUSE ME SHE CAN DO ANYTHING SHE WANTS' She cried to my SIL about how she is losing her son ok HI U UP AND LEFT URE ENTIRE FAMILY INCLUDING URE HUSBAND AND KIDS AND GRANDCHILDREN AND U ARE LOSING URE SON UMMMM.... NO. I really dislike her to the point that i do thinks like mail everyone pictures but her which is bad but hey....
SO THIS IS WHY I COULDNT DO IT. But if you have a nice MIL and you think you two can get a long under close corners then go for it. I wont even let my MIL stay for the night.

Re: MIL living with you
thanks for the replies. the thought of this is giving my DH migraines. He said he had a dream last night that he sat her down and was going over house rules with her. She is a mess and she is not nice to me. but I can't see telling her not to live with us. thanks

Re: MIL living with you
Seeing as I live with the in-laws now.. I voted yes. And mind you Im crawling to get out.
I was just raised that way. I could NOT say no. I could NOT complain about her to my husband or to her face. I'd just take it. Sounds weak I know. I'd probably vent with my dad and brother and MAYBE sooner or later talk to my hubby, but I do know I'd make my house rules known. No sit down cutsie talk. Just plain obvious 'this goes HERE'. Which is why I now want a lock for the outside of our door!!
All that said. My MIL and grandMIL aren't that bad. I rarely see my MIL but the G'MIL is a bit intrusive to say the least. But hey, all my grandparents are dead and gone, how can I take his grandmother away from him?
The BIL drives me slightly batty and the SIL is alright I guess.
