* - Monday NWQOTD - *

Good morning newlyweds! Hope today has been a relatively painless transition for those of you who went back to work after a long hiatus! (Who am I kidding? It was probably awful...)

So here's today's QOTD! For your pondering (and answering) pleasure:

Do you ever want to stop working and stay at home to become a 'housewife' (a modern one, I don't mean Donna Reed)?

Would DH ever want to become a 'househusband'?

or is working, a job, and an outside career something that both of you never plan to give up?

DH and I just had this conversation yesterday! It came up because I was off from work since before Christmas until today. I told him 'I never want to be a housewife - it's too much work.' I might be in the minority but I was very happy to return to work today.

Of course, it may be because we just moved into the house and I was unpacking boxes and putting things away, but it wasn't a relaxing week off at all.

I'd like to cut down to working 3-4 days a week when we have children, but I could never give up working completely - I like my job too much.

Sometimes I feel like thats what I want to do... and then I wonder if I will feel like a part of me is missing if I dont work outside of the home... I mean my mom did and she sacrificed a lot.

DH would totally stay at home and be a househusband! and I think he would be fabulous at it!

In a perfect world, I would like to work from home 3 days a week and in the office 2. DH is a guidance counselor, like many of you who work in the school system and have good schedule that enables work life balance...

Time will tell what we can afford, what we want and we can actually do...

I could never give up my career and all the schooling I have been through. I love my job. Alot of ppl tell me when u have kids its a different story but I doubt it will change.

DH would love to stay at home and be a house husband but I think its all talk. He enjoys his career as well so we will both be working parents. Luckily our careers are 9-5 and I work for the city so my benefits are great!!!

Yes. I would love to. I have many reasons why and I could write an essay about it but suffice it to say, yes.

I would Love to stay home and be a housewife/mom but realistically that will never happen. I dont mind working, I like making money and contributing but I just hate what I do. Im sure it would be different if I had a career I loved. But I wish I could work just a few days a week, or do something from home. DH would never want to be a stay at home Husband or Dad and Im glad for that, he likes to be the provider

If i could i would stay at home in a heartbeat! its like my dream job to be a stay at home mom!!! unfortunatly it will prob never happen!! unless we win the lotto or DH gets a super amazing job that pays 10x's as much as he makes now!!!

and DH prob would be ok with being a househusband...i would never let him! lol i would be sooo jealous its not even funny!!! ahh he prob rather work anyways.

some peoples goal in life is to be successful in their careers and have a wonderful job...but not me, i would trade a job for being a housewife in a heartbeat! just wish it was possible!

I would LOVE to be a stay at home mom like my mother. It was really nice that she was so involved in my life growing up and its why we are so super close. My mom was always the class mother, she was brownie cookie mother, she got me involved in a semi-prof play as a child and drove me to rehearsals every day. She also helped with all the things I did in High School - getting/making costumes for plays, driving us around to find costumes for Jazz Rock Choir, helping with class fundraising at the concession stand, cooking for bake sales, prom planning and coordinating the Senior Fashion Show. It was so nice that she would always drive my friends around or pick me up late after school. It made me the active and involved person I was and made us so close.

However I don't feel like we will be financially able to, and certainly not if we want to live like my parents lived and be able to travel and take my kids on trips, etc. My father owned his own manufacturing company in a different age, so today with manufacturing more or less gone from the US, it would be impossible for an engineer like DH to do as well as him unless DH gets a big boat business off the ground, in this economy, not likely.

I am not working now (not by choice) and I find it highly boring, but its just me and DH, most days just me. It's already better with the puppy.

I don't think that I can do it - I would def want to take time off after I had a kid to stay for a while but i think I would go batty after too long - I could def work part-time though -

I think DH would contemplate it in the long run but right now he is SOOO eager to start making money and feeling like he contributes since he's been in grad school and now looking for a job. .so unless he made money first he wouldnt do it. .

As soon as we're able to, the plan is that I stop working. Both me and DH come from stay at home mom families, and I want to do the same. He would probably like to stay at home too and play with the kids all day haha, but he wouldn't be a house husband. I hope as soon as we have our first child I never have to work again...also because I really don't like my job lol.

I kinda am already. We moved to DC from NY in Sept, and then after a few months of ttc we found out I was pregnant in Oct. I had given up my position in NY to move down here for DH's job. The opportunity for him was amazing & we couldn't pass it up. Well I wasn't able to find anything before we moved, and then found out I was pregnant right after we moved in. Kept looking & wasn't able to find anything worth while. Now I am showing, & almost half way. It just isn't worth it for me to take a position as I know I will be a stay at home mom after DC arrives in June. Even if I wanted to go back they wouldn't have to hold my position, or offer me any maternity benefits b/c of my limited time w/ a new company. So I am a real housewife of DC. I really think I would enjoy it more if I was so exhausted from this pregnancy.
DH works so hard at what he does & I love being able to take care of him at home. I know it sounds so old fashion, but I love being able to make things easier for him. He is so good to me, and the flow just works for us. My mom was a working mom my whole life, but my Italian grandmother lived w/ us, and I think that it rubbed off. She never worked after my dad & uncles were born, and just did the old school Italian mama thing.
DH would never want to stay home & be a househusband. He would go crazy, and wouldn't be any good at it. The extent of his cooking is grilling whatever I marinade, & making pancakes. He helps around the house but does not clean to my standard. I think he would love to be home w/ DC to spend the time with them, but the tasks of constant care would get to him.

I would but DH DEF would not. I love my job but I feel like the next step is for me to own my own place and until that happens, I'm just not in the mood to work and wish I could just stay home and do nothing (except spa & shop )

I would love to be a housewife/SAHM but finacially we would never be able to swing it unless we moved out of NY. If we were able to swing it then I would eventually get a part-time job once the kids were in school full time.

DH would never be a househusband...it's just not in him.

Do you ever want to stop working and stay at home to become a 'housewife' (a modern one, I don't mean Donna Reed)?
This is a fantabulous question and one I can answer with experience. I got a taste of the 'housewife' role. I hate it. I thought I would like it but I don't. I was laid off in July and have been the wench of the house since. I sleep late, I am bored, and I hate not having my career. I think if I had little kids running around, I would want to be home more.

Would DH ever want to become a 'househusband'?
No way. DH is far to traditional to do this. We don't knock anyone else that does this. Whatever works for a couple is what works for them, you know? DH is happy at his job and wouldn't want to give it up.

or is working, a job, and an outside career something that both of you never plan to give up? I don't want to give up working (Although it was given up for me.) And neither does DH. I have way too many goals in life. I love working hard and making something of myself. So, both of us would work regardless.

Re: * - Monday NWQOTD - *

I am a housewife! I graduated from college in May of 07 and landed an great job that August. I worked in a marketing/advertising company as the assistant to the CEO. At first it was great but then it got VERY stressful.

I was being given more and more responsibilities and my boss started telling me how in a couple years all the 'higher ups' would have assistants. (Company was founded in 2001 so it was still working it's way up) He wanted be to be the head of the assistant department. The commute and long hours were torture too.

All my life I thought I wanted to be this big shot career woman but as soon as it started to become a reality I realized it was not at all what I wanted. After a few months of coming home crying everyday from the stress and thinking about leaving I finally handed in my resignation. My boss did everything to try and get me to stay and I considered it but in the end I left.

At first I started looking for something else more local and not as fast paced but after a few months of being home and getting to organize our aprtment and seeing how much I actually enjoyed cooking and all the other 'domestic duties' DH and decided that since we were going ot start ttc soon anyway and I always wanted to be a SAHM that I should just start now!

I have to say I have never been happier. I truely love cooking and cleaning and making our house a home. I never feel unfulfilled. Some people have asked if I feel my education was a waste and my answer is not at all. I stay home because I want to. And if I ever decide I'm bored I have a degree.

Sorry I think that was way TMI
