I was so against it. I said I could never do that no way! But now that I think about it. It would save us so much money! My parents live in a great neighborhood and a great School District!
My parents have offered to put a dormer on the house. Make a full apt. Upstairs with a private entrance and everything would be brand new. We would pay them 'rent' to cover the extra mortgage (350.00 less a month then we pay now!) Plus we pay our own gas and electic which here we would only pay electic. The only thing is that we have to comit to stay here for a long long time.
I am ready Mike is iffy. Could you do it? Paying our rent now is NOT easy for us. We manage but have nothing left over.

Re: Moving in with parents could you do it?
I thought you would be saving so you could buy a house. Now I understand and really would not do it. I would figure out another way to save that money. I think you will be making too many compromises staying there (lack of privacy, potential entanglements with parents, and inability to move).

Could you move to a different apt to save the $350 on your own?
I think the main reason I wouldnt do it is b/c the saving of $350/mo is not worth the tradeoff of being locked into that situation until the mortgage is paid off. You may think you would never be able to afford a house but in 5 to 10 years, things may be different. Or you may want to move out of NY. Or your husband may not like living in your parents house and you are already trapped in the situation. Or after spending years there and paying off the mortgage, you may resent the fact that the house is going to be split 50/50 with your brother, etc...
If you were saving thousands a month, I could see the tradeoff being worth it but not for 350.

Re: Moving in with parents could you do it?
if it means you can save for a house and it is for only 2 years ABSOLUTELY
I would think the greater good would be worth the sacrifice !!!
BUT i guess that is really depends on your relationship with your parents
ETA...i thought it was for a house too!
NO i don't think i would live with my parents if you do not see a light at the end of the tunnel...
AND if you are only paying 350 i would think you could DEFINATELY save for a house SOMEWHERE it is one thing to get a mother daughter house...another to just build a dormer!!!

Re: Moving in with parents could you do it?
DH and I are thinking, almost definitly doing this to his moms house within a year or two.
When we have a baby, we both want me to be able to be a SAHM, and we wouldn't be able to afford a house if we didn't have 2 incomes.
We know that we will have a beautiful apt/house, 3 bedrooms and all that, probably for less than half the cost of a 'real' house.
I would recommend doing it, only if you don't plan on leaving right away. It is a good investment.

I don't think it makes sense if it isn't for the purpose of saving for a house. You will be making sacrifices regarding privacy and quality of life and the commitment is just too long. So many things could change in your situation in 3 - 5 years and then you'll be stuck. Plus, you may not see it now, but living with your parents again could really have some negative impacts on your relationship with them and maybe even your marriage. I wouldn't do it.

Everyone is different but there's no way I could do it. And, even if I wanted to, if DH wasn't 100% ok with it I wouldn't do it either. Living situations are so important. $350/month isn't worth my sanity.

I wouldn't do it unless you had planned on waiting for longer than that to start a family. I would think that being pregnant and having a child while living there could make things uncomfortable.
I think I could live with my parents for a short time, but not two years and I know that I couldn't live with my IL's. It was fine to stay over there on the weekends when DH and I were dating and engaged, but now that we are married and MIL wants grandchilren, I would feel like she would be listening to hear what we were doing and encouraging us to make a baby sooner than we planned.

Re: Moving in with parents could you do it?
We lived with my mom for 4 months after the wedding- it was the toughest thing I think I have ever had to do. Granted, the house was only 3 bedrooms, and all were small- the siutaion was BAD. We all constantly fought/got on each others nerves, and after month 4, I finally found a house to rent. There was no way I could stay there, and be with my DH, AND my mother. Saving money for those couple of months was great, but I'd only move back home if it was ABSOLUTELY necessary.
