My April Update ======> Surgery!

Original post by PreshusSmurf

First, I want to thank all of you who've been sending FMs to check in on me and see how I'm doing .... it means a lot to have so many wonderful people so worried about how I'm doing! And it definitely helps to have you all to talk to!

For those of you who don't know the back story ....

So ... on to the update ....

Went back to the Internist this morning ...
My spleen is NOT enlarged We still don't know what was causing the pain, but the Doc thinks it was from all the meds I've been taking for months now. We're gonna keep an eye on it though.

My calcium and sugar levels are lower than they were, which is good news. But I have to keep an eye on my sugar because if I don't, I could end up with diabetes So now I have one of those glucose testers to check it at home every once in a while.

My white cells and platelets are both high, even in the repeat bloods. So I have to go to a Hematologist to have MORE blood work done ! I hate blood tests, they have trouble finding my veins and I end up all black and blue Fortunately its not so high that its an emergency, and could probably be controlled with meds and monitored every 6 months.

Went to see a NEW Orthopedist today ...
Fortunately, the left side and the herniated & bulging discs seem to be almost all better. The oral steroids worked. I rarely have pain on my left side, and the numbness & tingling down to my fingers is gone too!

The right side is another story though

After looking at the MRI films, he confirmed what the report from the tech said -- I tore my Rotator Cuff in my right shoulder!!!!!

Its a full width tear, the tendon is completely torn .... which means that PT won't heal it. So I need to have surgery. Its arthroscopic and out-patient, and will only take about an hour to perform. They have to put a screw in my shoulder to re-attach the torn tendon to the bone. Following surgery, I will have to wear a sling for about 6 weeks and go through PT. And it will take about 4 -6 MONTHS to heal after the surgery.

I don't know when the surgery will be scheduled for ... probably a week or two from now.

But Colette found this smiley just in time .... she found it for Yesi, but says I can borrow it! I might have to make it my avatar

Re: My April Update ======> Surgery!

Jess, I can only say its GREAT that there's a solution; the surgery will go well and you'll be HEALING instead of HURTING which is a thousand times better!!!! When i had back surgery in '05 the 6 months prior was H*LL on earth, I was astounded DH and I made it through THAT, i was seriously intolerable due to the pain!!! My recovery period was HAPPY, I felt better as soon as I opened my eyes after surgery, so hopefully you will too!!
Chronic pain and pain meds seriously affect one's quality of life!!!

Hugs to you Jess and Yesi, for speedy recoveries all around!!!!

jess, omg you're going to have the same surgery i had! mine was to repair a partial rotator cuff tear and also a labral tear - my orthopedist put in anchors into the bone, i think he said 3 total, that dissolve on their own instead of the metal ones which obviously stay forever even after you heal. check to see if your doc can do this for you too. it will be ok!!!! the first couple of days suuuuucked, but after that it got better, you'll be fine i felt/feel the same way about being in this sling for 6 weeks and the up-to 6 months recovery time, but its better to have it fixed and start to feel better

i hope you keep getting better with everything else too fm me anytime, as you well know!

oh and colette, i never saw that avatar! i love it!!!!!! jess and i can share it, lol.

i will definitely ask about the dissolving anchors!

did you have to walk around with a refrigeration unit afterwards?

my aunt had this surgery last year and she had to keep her shoulder cold with this machine for like 3 days afterwards. it was huge and had to be plugged into electric and everything

i thought about it after the appointment, and the doc wasn't in today to ask. i'll have to ask next week.

so glad to hear that you are starting to feel better ... today is just agony
