My boss called me a 'C U Next Tuesday'!

No, seriously, he did!

This morning I spoke to him about an email that was wrong from someone and asked him a question regarding a submission of an item. Later in the morning I handed him the revised item for his signature. He then left his office and started talking to the engineer about it. I told him 'talk to me about it, I know what you are going to ask.' So he spoke to me about it and I guess he felt a little stupid after I explained it. So I go to put the file away and he said 'C U Next Tuesday'. Not the real word, but he said it like that. Then he said it again when I came back into the room. I said to him 'asking Randy about something I did is like if I ask Randy about a letter you wrote.'

He then says it AGAIN! Then says 'I assumed it came from Randy since it was drawings and he gave it to you.' I said 'How do you spell assume?' He saluted me and said 'C U Next Tuesday.' Then he said 'you make an a$$ out of YOU and me.'

Now my boss treats me fairly well and we get a long most of the time. We joke around and what not, he tells me I'm a moody and I tell him when he's being cranky. We are the 2 that have been with this company for 4+ years so we're comfortable with each other. At the same time, he's still my boss and that is still disrespectful to me. My dad thinks I should talk to him and tell him to not cross that line again. At the same time I'm scared to either upset him or him laugh because I just took it too far by even mentioning it to him.

What would you girls do?

And just to add to my morning I BANGED my right knee on my desk so hard it still hurts and hour later and now has a welt on it. Trying to decide if I should fill out an accident report. Today is NOT my day!

next time he says it i would probably say something like 'i realize i didnt mention it earlier, but i dont think thats appropriate'....something like that.

Agreed - would let him know that even though there is a good relationship but he crossed the line.

We don't really have an HR department. I documented it and told my dad about it who is a business rep in my union. He told me how I can proceed if I wish but it involves getting the union involved and getting my boss probably in a lot of trouble. Since we have a good relationship I would perfer not to do that (going into mediation), he has the power to make my life miserable here (or shall I say more miserable).

just to add...since you didnt say anything already. you can always act like you didnt know what C U Next Tues meant....so when he says it again, look really confused/upset. and say something like, 'are you trying to say something that you shouldnt be saying?? i realize you said it before, but i didnt realize...blah blah blah....bossman, we have a good working relationship, but that is not appropriate'

I know you were caught by surprise, but you should have addressed it at that exact moment with 'Did you just call me a CU#T?' put him in the same position he put you in - shock.

Now next time I saw him I would say it just like that. Say you caught me off guard when you said it but I now realize what you were saying and let the conversation go from there.

Since you guys have that kind of relationship, I'd speak to him directly. But if it continues to happen, you need to speak to HR or soemthing. That is NOT cool. It would take everything in me not to reach across and slap that man.

ETA: Just saw about HR. Is there anyway you can just file a complaint with your Union without taking further action? Just so it's a documented case.

umm, kinda like what phyllisandjoe said... i know you missed the moment but id go into his office... and be like... 'Oh sorry, i almost forgot... the next time you call me a CU#T (and definitely say the word dont pussy foot it... hahaha sorry) were going to have a serious problem!'

I work for the biggest law firm on LI. Within my frist 3 months, I threw a binder at my direct boss and now, 5 years later, we know how each other works and we get along just fine. Luckily, I wasn't fired, but he had no idea how to talk to people.

ITA with this.....

Its cool that you have a decent relationship with your boss but there is definitely a right and wrong way to speak to a person (boss/employee relationship aside) and you have to create the boundries as he obviously has no clue what a boundry is.

Sorry that you have to deal with this.... its really disgusting and therefore I agree with the above.

In the moment its hard to react at those things b/c some times they are so shocking. But you dont deserve to be spoken to like that, so I would nip it in the butt sooner then later.

Talk to him about it and if he doesn't apologize I would go straight to HR. Good relationship with him or not he had no right to say that even if he was joking.

Just saw about HR... if he really doesn't apologize or if it happens again you should go to your union rep. This at least needs to be documented so if it does happen again there is record. I know you like the guy but as someone who works in HR this is totally unacceptable.
