YUP! Happy to be 'married' to the whole world, but sad feeling like the 'original' me didn't exist anymore.

And, I work for such a HUGE company that I am constantly saying to colleagues in different departments, 'Hi, I used to be Susan Jones. Can you look me up under Jones, but change me to Susan Smith?'

Me too. I did it early on to get it over with. And I started using my new married name at work as soon as I returned from the HM.

On St. Patrick's Day, someone wished me a Happy St. Paddy's Day 'because I'm Irish.' But I'm not. My DH is. My old last name was Italian. It was kind-of sad for me to give up this part of my identity. (Oh- and I don't even remotely look Italian.)

this has nothing to do with the question, but did your name really go from Jones to Smith?! LOL That just struck me because they're such common names--rare that you go from one to the other--then i thought that maybe you just used that as an example! hahaha i can be extremely clueless at times haha

I definitely felt that way and it was SOOO weird because I've always wanted to change my last name because I didn't like it...but when the time came I felt really sad about it. I'm over it though, my new name makes me sound like a latin soap opera star

I went thru the same thing. I still have to catch myself sometimes, for example when I am picking up a prescription.... I always say my maiden name and then I have to correct myself.

I had the same experience on St. Patrick's Day. My maiden name is Italian, but I take after the Polish side.

I honestly don't feel like I've given up my identity.

Re: name change experience

when i went to the DMV not only did i loose my last name identity but my first name had to change also. Because my new last name is so long they had to take a letter out of my first name to fit it. Now i have to continuosly correct people on the spelling of my last name AND my first name!!!
