Name change question

Hi Ladies,

This is my first post on the Newlywed Board. I still can't believe that I am married!!! It is the greatest feeling in the world. Anyway, now I have the pleasure of going through the annoying process of changing my name and I have no idea where to start. Anyone have any advice - am I supposed to go to social security or dmv first? What do I have to bring? How long does the process take? Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Name change question

For me - I went to Social Security first to change my name there, and then I went to DMV afterwards. You only need your marriage license (the original not a copy). At Social Security I probably waited about an hour before I got called up (that just might have been the SS place that I went to though), and at DMV I was in and out within about a half hour or so.

As far as credit cards and bank info - most credit cards have to be done over the phone, the bank info you have to physically go there and change it - you will also need your marriage license for the bank as well. HTH!!

Re: Name change question

I just did all that last week date twin!! After I got the certificate I went to the social security office, filled out the paper work showed them the marriage certificate and this week my new card should arrive.

As for DMV, I live in NJ all I needed was the marriage cert. and old license and proof of new address(we moved) and I got my new license on the spot ( I believe in NY it comes in mail? )

and now viola..I'm a Mrs..

Re: Name change question

Once you have the marraige certificate, you can go to SS and have them change your name there.

Then you can go to DMV (take the receipt from SS or your new SS card) and have them change your license, registration, and title.

Once you do that, you can change your name on your credit cards, bank accounts, diplomas, etc.

Ditto! I went to the SSA 1st. Marriage cert & license/ID needed. Just got my card in the mail Friday-I went Fri. 7/20. Went to DMV, Fri. 7/20. I filled out all necessary forms online & brought them with me, to save time. I changed name for CC over phone & did banking info. in brange w/ marriage cert. I leave mine in my car, so I always have it. But, done now. Passport next!

Re: Name change question

I first went to the DMV to change my license then i headed to the SS office and changed all my CC's by phone. They only thing left to do is mail in my passport renewal application along with my marriage license and photos for a new passport. It wasnt too bad.
