whats the deal with these. why would one need to buy one?

you don't basically you can go online to the department of social security and the DMV and download & print out the forms you need then just go to the office. You will need your marriage certificate for both. After that you can change all your credit cards, loans etc. Really I didn't have to show proof of change of name to my credit cards etc, just when I changed my name at the bank. As for the kit it is just another way for these companies to make money.
