Naming Kids

Naming Kids

Random question, but I thought it would be a good discussion topic!

DH and I were playing around with names for our non-existent children, and for the past few months, he has been insisting that--if we ever have a daughter--her name HAS to be Rylee. Here's the thing: he came up with the name because one of my closest friends has a DOG named Rylee. Granted, I like the name, but all I can think of when hearing it now from his mouth is this cute black lab.

My question for you all: are any of you vetoing names specifically because you know someone (human or animal) by that name? How does DH feel about it?

YES! DH won't name our Lucas because of a devil child we know by the name of Lucas. I really like that name though...oh well.

But I just wanted to say that I love the name Rylee, so cute. I know someone by that name, she spells it like Riley.

DH has always wanted to name our first, non-existent daughter Alexandria. My cousin had a baby girl last year and gave her that name, after our grandfather Alex. DH is NOT happy about that. I don't want to have two kids in the family with the same name. So, he's just gonna have to get over it.

Yes ... I love the name Madeline and am itching to name my future that but DH says it reminds him of 'an old cranky lady' who used to live on his block growing up. I've also always liked Adeline but his cousin is named Adeline so that is also out.

I told DH that he gets 49% of the vote and I get 51%. We're not going to name our children anything that one of us hates.

My mom and DH both completely disagree with my logic.

I love the name Rylee and that is such a nice spelling. Also love the name Sadie, and the story behind it.

I used to love the name Aubrey, and told DH that when we were dating. He fell in love with the name, but now I am kind of over it. DH also likes the name Ainsley for a girl.

For girls names, I like Ava, Grace, and Sadie.
Boys names are harder for me. I like Jack, but there are so many of them. A friend just had a Wes and that is cute.

I don't think I will specifically veto a name because someone has it, but I do think that you associate names with people you know who have them and I am sure that will influence how much I like names. Like I used to love the name Melanie and I hate it now. If I think about it, its not the name but my association with the name to my lazy, whiny, spoiled, bacon loving (cooked it EVERY day in our micro fridge) college roommate.

My friend Elissa bought a dog named Bonnie. The breeder named the dog and Elissa decided to keep the name, even though her mom's name is Bonnie. Her mom hates that.

I love the name Sadie. I actually never heard of it until I found out that DH's great grandmother's nickname was Sadie (Sarah).

Whats the story behind it??

to the bacon-loving comment.

that's a funny story about your friend's dog. my sister named her boxer Hugo since boxers are german and that was my grandfather's name. she did it to spite my mom, and my mom actually thinks it's adorable .

Re: Naming Kids

this was hard for me b/c i used to work at a kids gym and every name we would bring up reminded me of someone... but Madlyn was my grandmother's name and i have said for YEARS that i wanted to name my daughter that... we were lucky enough to have a girl... i don't know what we'll do if we have a boy... DH has a ridiculous name.. and i'm SOOO against it!

Of course - let's just say I WON'T be naming my children after MIL!!!

I tell DH all the time, he gets to give them the last name - I get to pick the first name!
