Naming Kids

Original post by miamimerger

Random question, but I thought it would be a good discussion topic!

DH and I were playing around with names for our non-existent children, and for the past few months, he has been insisting that--if we ever have a daughter--her name HAS to be Rylee. Here's the thing: he came up with the name because one of my closest friends has a DOG named Rylee. Granted, I like the name, but all I can think of when hearing it now from his mouth is this cute black lab.

My question for you all: are any of you vetoing names specifically because you know someone (human or animal) by that name? How does DH feel about it?

I love the name Rylee and that is such a nice spelling. Also love the name Sadie, and the story behind it.

I used to love the name Aubrey, and told DH that when we were dating. He fell in love with the name, but now I am kind of over it. DH also likes the name Ainsley for a girl.

For girls names, I like Ava, Grace, and Sadie.
Boys names are harder for me. I like Jack, but there are so many of them. A friend just had a Wes and that is cute.

I love the name Sadie. I actually never heard of it until I found out that DH's great grandmother's nickname was Sadie (Sarah).

Whats the story behind it??

See Jenth's comment above - it was a family name for them.

Just about everyone one my family is named Madeline!!! An aunt, a cousin, a cousin's daughter, my cousin's daughter's daughter.....you get the point.

DH used to joke all the time when we first started dating that it was easy to go to a family function because he just had to call everyone Madeline and he'd usually be right. Now he says all the time our firstborn is just going to be named 'Not Madeline'

Re: Naming Kids

Well, DH is very adamant that we name our first child after his mother or father depending on the sex, then the second child after my mother or father depending, then back to his side, until we run out of parents or children. It's a Greek tradition.

I am absolutely fighting this tooth and nail. So in a sense, I'm vetoing the names of our parents. Not because they're our parents...but more because of the very plain way he stated that this is how it would be, like I don't have a choice. I said, they come out of me, I name them. What I want. Because I like the name. And I don't want my kids to have 2 cousins with the same names as them. It's really like the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding...and these are his children, nick, nick, and anita. And this is my other brother, and these are his children, nick, nick, and anita. NOOOOOOOOO.

The only thing that was in my favor is that MIL has said that she regrets she allowed herself to be pushed in to doing it herself. But then last year DH's grandmother passed away and she changed her tune and said she was glad she named SIL her name. BAH. It's a very big bone of contention, I almost don't want kids because I know the fights it will lead to to name them.

DH picked a girls name that I absolutely hated in the beginning but now I love it. It will definitely be our name for our little girl whenever the time comes.

I actually picked a boys name that I loved for awhile but now I am on the fence about it.

I am not posting the names since we decided to keep the names between only us and we will reveal them when our DC come along.

Hubby has this 'thing' with places...

This is the following names we would have to pick from for a girl:

Dakota
Savannah
London
Kalli

He wanted Maximillian for a boy i said NO WAY

Originally Dean would be Luca, but too many kids with that name now!

I LOVE the name Dean--we have a friend with a baby named Dean, and I remember thinking that it was such a great name :).

My photographer just had a baby and named him Chase London :). Why does your DH have a thing with places? There must be a story behind that!

DH & I were talking a bit about names last night...I wanted to know what he thought of the name Sadie. He liked it, and now he's dead set on Sadie Jean
(first name after his great grandma, middle name after his grandma).

I like it & I dont. I think I would prefer Sadie Rose or Sadie Marie.

Re: Naming Kids

DH refuses to name our kids any name that one of our friends/acquaintances named their kid or anyone with the same name as someone he or any of his friends ever dated (even if it was elementary school)

The only boy name we agree on is Giovanni, but call the boy Gio for short.....(I would rather just name him Gio, but DH wants the formal name).

The only girl names we agree on is Giuliana or Ava Zoe....but ssshhhh!! Don't tell DH that Ava's a popular name

I live for the name Olivia-but DH's childhood friend named his baby that. so now he refuses..

Re: Naming Kids

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've been away a while so I'm just catching up!!!

My parents insist they didn't do it on purpose, but my name was known when I was little as being the name of Annie's dog in the movie Annie. I got teased in early elementary school for it, but it never really bothered me. I would be fine with using a name that brings up fond memories of a wonderful pet. It's not like you're going to treat your child like a pet!!! lol

I always liked the name Ryan but DH has a very close friend at work named Ryan so I wouldn't use that name anymore. I'm at kinda a loss what we'll do if we have a boy -- why are boys names so hard? lol... well, there's plenty of time for all that. I like names from history and came up with 'Franklin' but DH totally vetoed it because when he first moved to NC the kids in his new h.s. made up a song about him (weirdos) and called him 'Frank' in it so he hates the name. Oh well.

DH thinks I'm crazy for always thinking about baby names... but I love seeing that I'm not alone.

I don't think I will specifically veto a name because someone has it, but I do think that you associate names with people you know who have them and I am sure that will influence how much I like names. Like I used to love the name Melanie and I hate it now. If I think about it, its not the name but my association with the name to my lazy, whiny, spoiled, bacon loving (cooked it EVERY day in our micro fridge) college roommate.

My friend Elissa bought a dog named Bonnie. The breeder named the dog and Elissa decided to keep the name, even though her mom's name is Bonnie. Her mom hates that.

to the bacon-loving comment.

My whole room smelled like bacon all the time. I couldn't eat it for 5 years after living with her. And she claimed she was a devout jew, which made it even more funny and annoying because I am no expert but I am pretty sure that she is not supposed to eat bacon.

Funny you should say that, because for a boys name I love Angelos/Angelo depending if I want to go Greek or Italian, and my cat's name was Angel...I happen to like the name anyways, but I'd kinda like to do that. DH would never hear of it once he makes the correlation, but I still like the name.
