Need advice on a Paris Hotel....(HOTEL LINK INCLUDED....anyone know anything?)

Mom and I are going to Paris for the first week of April (YAY!)

Can someone advise me of some good places to stay?

Are you shopper, walkers, museum goers?
Paris is loaded with wonderful hotels, but the city is broken down into sections-what are your interests? We stayed across from the jardin des tulleries & the Louvre at the Clarion-it was good-not great because it was undergoing renovations at the time but the location was fabulous.

Re: Need advice on a Paris Hotel....

We stayed at the Regina Hotel - really nice, and right near the Louvre & eiffel tower - 4 star and kinda pricey, but well worth it - it was our HM

We spent 2 weeks in France (all over the place) - one of the highlights was a cooking class with Samira - she brought us to the market and we shopped for ingredients and then we went to her house and cooked a 5 course meal, and ate it !!

She runs one day courses. We started the day at 8.30 am and said goodbye around 5.30 pm

here's her website

food unites the world

Fm if you want more info

We are both walkers and most definitely shoppers....Will certainly see a few museums, but that wouldn't be our draw....

I'd say our interests are shopping a lot, eating well and often ;), and taking in all the obvious sights that one sees in paris....

Re: Need advice on a Paris Hotel....

my advice would be to look at the map of the city online(most french travel sites have it) then decide what sights are highest on your list-I don't think you can really see every museum in 1 week-so if you stay near the Rue du Rivoli you will be with 15 minutes walking distance of Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Les Invilades, the louvre, the latin quarter, all great shopping-Champs Elysse, the Seine
That would be my advice-there are about 20 bistros/cafes right on that strip that are great for breakfast/lunch.
you really can't go wrong if you're in the center of everything. Book the River Dinner Cruise-it was fun, affordable & a spectacular way to see the city!

Re: Need advice on a Paris Hotel....

Thank you all for all of your helpful suggestions....

Since Mom is funding this mother-daughter expedition, she has decided that the hotel is up to her! lol!!!!

She feels that the left bank, namely the latin quarter is a bit too 'young' for her.

So, I digress....the right bank it is....

Hotel Concorde Saint Lazare

That is where we are staying....anyone heard anything? know anything?

Any other suggestions for my Paris trip are welcome!!!! thank you all!!!!

Sage, climb the arch de triumph!!! Its fun and affords a nice view of the city. And visit the Louvre in the begining of your stay, b.c. you may be too exhausted for it at the end.

We got a card for one of those tourist busses that take you around (hop on/hop off) and were glad to not navigate the metro during the times that we used the bus.

Don't now the hotel, but wanted to say, make sure they offer bathroom in your room and not a community bathroom. The French Quarter did remind me of the Village, so your mom is right. Do one of those hop on hop off tour on the bus. It is great. You can also do Biking with Mike, where is Fran when you need her, or is it Erica that told me about this, all very affordable. The bus pass is good for a 24 hr period and you can stop at the museums along the route and hop back on when you are done. Its Mike's Bike Tour.
Are you and your mom bike riders????

Re: Need advice on a Paris Hotel....(HOTEL LINK INCLUDED....anyone know anything?)

YES!! Mike's Bike Tours...you do not have to be a biker...they are easy Schwinns...and leisurely rides!!! (I haven't done the Paris one...but I have done Munich and Barcelona)

Mike's Bike Tour - Paris and they have those segway riders too (well the they show them on the internet...so you may not even have to do the bikes if you hate that idea)

it is a great way to see the city...very fun...the guides are all native English speakers...and really give you a great idea about the city and little fun facts...its good to do in the beginning...b/c they will show you all of the city and then you can go back and explore on your own

I also went on an English Writers Walking tour...also native English speakers...we found a brochure for it at our hostel...so not really sure about the contact info...but here is another link to walking tours

I agree do the Lourve in the beginning...then if you decided you want to see more...you can...

Paris has one of the best Picasso museums in the world...b/c he died there...adn owed the French govt tons of back taxes...so they seized his art...including a huge collection of Matisse (they were friends)

Eiffel Tower of course
Arc d'Triomphe
Champs Ellise (sp?)
at least walk around the Sorbonne (Latin Quarter)
the Ferris Wheel (by the Louvre)

Versailles? it is about 10 min outside Paris...but it really is a fantastic site...

don't forget to have some crapes and Croque Monsieur and croque madam - and sit at a cafe for a few hours...

can you tell that Paris is one of my favorite cities!?!?!?!?

wanted to add: Per Lachaise Cimetiere
a little morbid...but this is the cemetery that Jim Morrison is buried in...there are also tons of others...like Oscar Wilde...Collette...Clemenceau...Abelard and Heloise...

my FIL is also buried there...

Thank you so much for all of this info...
I really can't wait and am so excited to be able to do this with my Mom!

The confusion has set in b/c we are venturing into the unknown. I always get a little nervous the first time I go somewhere new...

Although we already booked our hotel, we are also considering this one on the left bank in St. Germain du pres:

Hotel
Verneuil

Any recommendations in this area????

ps - SHamma - Thank you....the first thing I always do when traveling to Europe is to make sure I have a bathroom of my own!!! Somethings you just can't live w/o!!!! lol!!

Thanks again!

Re: Need advice on a Paris Hotel....(HOTEL LINK INCLUDED....anyone know anything?)

you will have a blast with mom...as long as she is up for walking ALOT!!!!

to make yourself feel better...pick up a Paris street map and subway map...bookstores usually have nice small laminated ones...I have an LA and SD one...but I am sure that there is a Paris one...I always like to have a Frommer's guide with me too...they will tell you these little nooks and crannies places to go...that I find other travel books don't get into

also...make sure you hold onto your subway tickets...they have people standing around asking for them 'Billet' to make sure that you paid...

i know your mom doesn't want to be on the left bank...but that hotel has an AWESOME location...so close to the bridge...you won't notice that you are on the left bank...and its not really in the Latin Quarter

that also reminds me - go to St Chappelle(known for FANTASTIC stained glass) and Notre Dame...also in the area...the Parthenon...the Luxembourg Garden

When I was there we went to the Perfume factory (the name of it is Fragonard) I got some really nice perfume there. We also ate at 'An Bistrot de la Montagne' the food was very good. I went to the top floor of the Eiffel Tower but did't get to walk up Arc de Triumph.

Oh good - I feel even better now!

ps- what are 'Croque Monsieur and croque madam '????
yabbobay Posted:

Re: Need advice on a Paris Hotel....(HOTEL LINK INCLUDED....anyone know anything?)

they are really simple sandwiches...

croque monsieur is ham and cheese on french bread (heated usually) and madam is with an egg

ETA: there are tons of these types of sandwiched usually at cafes...so you can get ingredients that you like
