Misty gave me another idea I like, those huge garbage type xmas wrap bags, then i can stuff it with newspaper to take away the shape.

I would go to a music store and ask if they have or will sell you cello or violin or giatar flat box
something really big
he will have no clue if you put it in a cello box!

sometimes they put a violin in its case then a box
I saw one like that once when I had a violin
the box is much larger then the violin

Why not trick him COMPLETELY? wrap a box within a box within a box with nothing but little signs leading him all throughout the apt. for his gift? and you can then put the guitar all wrapped like in a closet or something?
