I've actually eaten there. I didn't think it was that upscale though.

Here are some:

Asia de Cuba - its very chic and trendy with good food and a younger crowd. Theres a huge waterfall wall which makes a great atmosphere.

Sushi Samba- also trendy and attracts a younger crowd. Great sushi and so many variaties of saki flavors to choose from.

Tao - Great huge bar area to hang out after dinner. Also really love their atmosphere.

Nobu - great Japaense cuisine.

Blvd- Its a club and resturant and the decor is gorgeous. My friend had her bday party here and we had so much fun!

If i can think of more places ill let you know.

I've always liked The Palm restaurants...may not be considered 'upscale' ...but the food is always GREAT! I've been to a few different locations...and all were same quality food.

There are so many places to go.....

Rosa Mexicano - has 3 locations, I think the one in Union Square is the most fun. It is Mexican food and it is a pretty lively/fun crowd

Del Posto - Italian food, very good food but the crowd is a bit stuffy.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse - has 2 locations, the crowd is very loud and I think it is the best steak in NYC

Spice Market - young, hip crowd in the meat packing district

Son Cubano - young hip crowd in the meat packing district. The food is Spanish, have tapas and awesome Sangria

Hope this helps....

Just thought of one more

Philippe - Upscale Chinese Food (not like chinese take out). It is always very crowded but I have eaten there 3 times without a reservation. That being said I would make a reservation if you can. The first time I was there I saw A-Rod (from the yankees), the second time I was there I saw George Clooney!!!!!

Re: Need help with places in NYC

Little place that we enjoy, Aleo on West 20th Street
A friend of DH owns it and the food is fabulous.
It is small, but there is a lovely walled in back yard for al fresco dining. Usually some Sinatra or light jazz playing in the background.
DH had my 40th b-day party here.

Aleo
