New Orleans

My hubby and I are going there the week before Thanksgiving. I am so excited about it. He has a conference so I am going with him.

Anyway just wondering if anyone has suggestions of good restaurants and stuff for me to do while he has to be at the confernece.

We already made reservations at Commander's Palace.

Thanks

Re: New Orleans

I LOVE New Orleans!!!!!!!!

Must do's:

Walk around Jackson Square

Most hotels have bus tours that will take you around to different parts of the city & cemetaries.

They have walking tours of the French Quarter -including witch & voo doo tours.

There's a ton of art galleries in the French Quarter as well.

Go to Cafe du Monde for beniets (sp?)

Have hurricanes at Pat O'Briens in their dueling piano bar. After one hurricane it's the best thing you have ever seen:D

For food - EVERYTHING is delish. Commander's Palace is OUTSTANDING! Other places we like: Brennen's (for Burnch) & Mr. B's (for dinner). Delight (in the sonesta hotel) for po-boys.

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You'll have a great time. We're going back in April and I can't wait.

There's a lot of great walking tours that are very interesting and easy on your wallet. We took one of the Garden District. There's a tourist office right buy Cafe du Monde that we got the tickets at. Less than $20 for the two of us and well worth it. You'll see the cemetery where part of Double Jeopardy was filmed.

There're great bands that play in the French Quarter at all the different clubs. Just walk down Bourbon street. There were no cover charges during happy hour so you can just walk in a club and if you like the music, have a drink.

For a cheap local place for dinner that the tourists don't know about, try Maspero's on Chartres west of the Quarter. Delicious and cheap, esp. for New Orleans.

Have a great time!!

i'll second what these ladies said about cafe du monde for beniets (sp?) and pat o brien hurricanes. those are a MUST!
also, a good little restaurant is the ALPINE. delicious blackened steak or chicken. i'm not one for anything cajun style, but this is delish!!!
i'm going the week after xmas for the 4th time!!!
emeril's is also good, but pricey and you NEED reservations. you'll even wait 1/2 - 45 min WITH reservations! have a BLAST! sooo much fun!

OH - and the cat's meow (fun kareoke bar) and razoo is so much fun. hell - all those places are awesome! AND happy hour is usually 3 FOR 1 in most places!!! and it lasts 5 hrs !

I third what the ladies said . I love New Orleans the only other place I can add is go to Petunia's (like the flower, don't know if I spelt it right) go there for breakfast. The food is really good but you will get a laugh out of the service...you'll see what I mean.

Re: New Orleans

Thanks for all of your advice. I am sure I will have plenty to keep myself busy...

We are staying at the MArriot on canal street. On the edge of the french quarter. ( that is where his conference is).

It should be so much fun.

Lucky you!! NO is fun, fun, fun. We used to go each spring for Jazz Fest-always a blast.

Some bars/music clubs we've had fun at-Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, House of Blues, Tipitina's, the Funky Pirate (especially when Big Al Carson is playing), Spotted Cat.

Had great meals at and have returned often to-Mothers, Broussards, Acme Oyster House, NOLA, Feelings Cafe (nice courtyard), Atchafalaya. Love the muffalettas at Central Grocery.

Shop at shops on Magazine Street, at the French Market near Cafe duMonde, Jackson Square. Beignets are great at duMonde, so is the coffee (chickory?).

Abita Turbo Dog and Purple Haze beer, Dixie Blackened Voodoo beer, and of course hurricanes.

Always wanted to take a tour of the Garden District mansions-you can take street car up St. Charles.

If you want to see the cemetaries, don't do it on your own-not safe. Take a tour. Aquarium and Zoo are fun breaks from eating/drinking.

Have a great time! It's be hard not too!!

Re: New Orleans

LOVED the funky pirate (great stevie ray vaghan cover pand when I went)
Lafitte blacksmith shop is cool and Pat o'brians is great.

We also took a haunted ghost tour of the frenxh quarter (great!), a tour of the garden district that included Anne Rice's house, birth house, lafayette cemetary and St. annes...I am a fan of hers so I loved that!)

We also took this great cajun cooking class in jackson square....cooking cajun it was called I think, it wa lots of fun if you are into cooking.

Audubon zoo is a really nice zoo, and we also took a ride on the Natchez steamboat for a jazz cruise(the ship can be seen in Interview with the vampire)

I also heard it was awesome, but didn't get to go to the court of two sisters restaurant.
There's also chef paul prudhomme's restaurant as well as Emeril's, but book reservations early...Have fun! I wanna go back!
