Newlyweds - what are the little things....

- you think your guests noticed most? I want to make something stand out on our day. What little extras did you do that people commented on... maybe good or bad?

Guests commented on my fall theme, my placecards, my favors, my table numbers...they all matched with the fall theme. A lot commented on my guestbook (not a traditional~~~you drew pics, named our first kids, how we met, etc)...that was a huge hit and I loved the responses we got, they were great and had us hysterical when we read them.

Good question!

As far a little things that made a difference: People really loved the hotel guest bags, the special pumpkin placecards I used, and the table camera scavenger hunt.

oh yeah - the anniversary dance was a huuuge hit. I think it may have been because we had like 4 couples married 50+ years - it was very special and emotional to watch.

I did a few things in memory of my dad: donation to the American Cancer Society as a favor and on the last page of our program, I scanned and color printed a picture of my dad and I dancing at a wedding a few years ago. It had quite a few people teary eyed and I received many compliments. My goodness, I'm getting teary eyed thinking about it.

Re: Newlyweds - what are the little things....

Different sets of people noticed different things....but lots of people commented on those little details that people said no one would care about. There really was nothing at our wedding at least a few people didnt say something nice about.

Edited to add: Lots of people commented about the location since it was not the usually catering hall type place, the food and the band. I guess I had more faith in that people would like/enjoy those things so I dont remember those comments as much as the little detailed stuff like 'I loved that you wrote so and so in your program'.

Also - as a guest, I always notice how 'in love' the couple looks/acts. I think it really ruins a wedding when the bride and groom are barely paying attention to each other. Of course, I would never mention anything like that to a couple but I think the whole experience is enhanced when you feel a love vibe between the two.

Lastly - when the bride/groom dance, the guests tend to have a better time. Ive been to wedding where the bride and groom barely dance and again - its just not the same as one where you see the bride and groom having a great time.

I totally agree with Stef's last point! I think the couple needs to appear they are enjoying themselves and that makes the guests enjoy the night more - kind of sets the tone. I went to wedding where the bride and groom (our really good friends who are usually crazy fun) seemed to spend the whole night going table to table greeting guests and playing hosts. Not once did I see them on the dance floor (besides special dances). It just seemed like the couple wasn't enjoying themselves like they normally would!!! DH and I vowed not to do that. We spend the entire night dancing and having a blast!

Mostly people commented on the place (Carlyle) and the food. I think most of the people there never had been to a place like the Carlyle and they were expecting a place not as lavish.

People commented on the band- it was a 12 piece band that played jazz- standards- R&B- soul, etc. Most people don't have huge bands at their weddings like that- Also- my mom is a musician & she sang two songs as my step-dad played piano- it was so touching.

People commented on the flowers- the color scheme- the candles on each table, etc.

Mostly- I spent money on the big, noticeable things (band, flowers, hall, etc) instead of spreading myself too thin with details I really didn't have the time to do (we only had 7 months to plan, we were moving and both going to school).

Sure I did little 'touches' like hotel amenity bags and the pictures of us growing up at the cocktail hour... but I think the big things are what totally stood out to my guests from what they say to me.

People seemed to enjoy:

The string quartet we had at the church - that was a little different than the typical organ music.

My basket of rose petal cones to use outside the church for the toss (they were a little different with sheets of music rolled up)

The reception hall in general - ours was an out-of-the way place that isn't yet TOO common for weddings around here, so for many it was their first visit which was nice.

My handmade leaf placecards that everyone loved; I also decorated mini pumpkins for the head table.

We had a display of family pictures at the cocktail hr that everyone enjoyed seeing (many relatives had passed away so it was nice to have)

Naming our tables was a little different (although it's becoming quite popular now!)

Our awesome DJ who played exactly what we wanted to hear - I know I'm biased, but EVERYONE seemed to enjoy themselves at the reception - no lulls!

That's all I can think of for now! I was glad I spent the time and energy on the smaller details - towards the end I wondered if it was worth it, but it really was, and I was happy to see everyone appreciate it!

Thanks girls - I'm getting alot of ideas... Seems like just when I thought my fall theme was different - everyone's been doing it! I like the photo ideas also... it adds such a personal touch!

how could I forget my fall theme! and yes, it's also very popular now. That's what tied my decorations and everything together - was the fall theme I had. It was subtle, but I used it with my centerpieces, bouquets, placecards, church flowers and programs, rose cones, just about everything

My guests complimented us on how happy and how much fun we were having! They also loved the place candles, table camera scavenger hunt, menu cards, and favors. People also complimented the site b/c it was different and how good the food was (vegetarian too!!).

I got a lot of compliments on things but the one thing that was overall was the food to me.

Everyone kept saying the food was excellent.

I so agree with Stef I think the entire atmosphere of the wedding stems from the bride and groom.

Re: Newlyweds - what are the little things....

jcndd- don't say your fall theme isn't different enough. I also did a subtle fall theme and many many people commented on it. I rarely go to a wedding where you see that the couple paid attenion to such little things to take it te extra step. It isn't necessary but it will always make a nice touch!!!!!!!! I am sure your fall theme will be great!!!

Re: Newlyweds - what are the little things....

I also think that the wedding should reflect the bride and groom's personality. Don't try too hard to be someone or have something that doesn't suit your tastes or personalities. (I hope that makes sense.) I think that really shows thru!!
