Newlyweds who took their husband's name - tell me ...

what the heck do I need to do to get my name changed on everything???

I just downloaded DMV forms ... but I thought I remembered a post that you need the marriage license back from the town to use as 'proof'

Re: Newlyweds who took their husband's name - tell me ...

I used my marriage certificate not my marriage license. And it was alright. Actually I used a simple black and white form that i got when Jim & I did our civil ceremony, didn't get the real certificate for another few weeks.

Need your birth certificate too. SS place was the EASIST change. DMV was a pain in the arse.

If you own your car, remember to change your title was well, they don't tell you that. So you need to bring your title with you.

Here's the ones I've changed so far:
DMV
SS
Payroll
Title for car
Insurance for car/home
Banks (the ones we share) - I still have a private acct
Major Credit Cards
Insurance Cards (Health)

Im still been lazy about:
Dept store cards
Membership cards (AAA, etc)
Gas cards
Dental Insurance (which I need to do soon)

Have fun! I took a whole day off for this bs. Dragged Jim with me too (he had to sign at the bank).

Re: Newlyweds who took their husband's name - tell me ...

my certificate/licence came in a week! I used just that for all the changes, except the registration, they wanted the title for that. It was tedious, but I couldnt wait! The only thing I didnt change was the credit cards.....I'm sure they wont mind as long as they get their $$$ :)

Re: Newlyweds who took their husband's name - tell me ...

I attempted the process yesterday... DMV is out to make our lives a living hell... no matter how prepared you are, you're never prepared with the proper info. I waited on line and found out I needed to first get my ss card name changed... so i did that, then ss said i can't go to dmv until i receive my NEW ss card with my new name on it. I don't know when i will ever have time to take off from work again, i used up all my vacation days for the wedding & honeymoon!

Re: Newlyweds who took their husband's name - tell me ...

Can you go to DMV one of the nights they are open later? That is what I did! But you are right they are the worst! Social Security I had my DH take all the forms down on his day off I didn't even have to be there. But you should have received something from Soc Sec saying that you filed to change your name. Maybe you could have used that at DMV?

Kathleen,

Why not the Credit Cards? That was the easiest. Just a phone call.

I called Credit Cards while at home in PJ's & on the computer. Very Easy.
