No Gift?

No Gift?

Now, I know technically people have up to a year to send a gift. But I was kind of suprised when we got stiffed by 3 different guests that attended the wedding. I thought you had up to a year to send a gift if you weren't attending the actual affair.

Did anyone else not receive a gift from a guest the day of the wedding?

No.
But, for the last 2 weddings that i went to, i forgot the gift both times. In the 1 in August (i was MOH, by the way ), i had it and completely forgot to put it in the card box, and at the one last week, we ran out the door and realized we forgot it at home when we were already almost at the place. So it couldve been that too. Maybe theyre not cheap- just braindead like me

ETS: so i'd give it a little bit longer before getting too upset

we had five people not give us gifts...BUT, about a week later three of them sent us their gifts with explanations that they forgot...the other two, well, we are still waiting. seems kinda strange...

Yup...we had 11 for awhile. Then three of them have given us gifts in the past year. It's a lot more commen then you think. And some of the people at our wedding who stiffed us make good money and were not struggling. Just a card would of been nice.

I didn't send TY's to those people. Some people on these boards have though. It's all a personal decision.

Re: No Gift?

people who attend the wedding have 1 year to give a gift. People who do not attend do not have to give anything.

I think the '1 year' rule is the DUMBEST thing EVER. But, apparently it was put in place because if a marriage ends before 1 year, the gifts are supposed to be returned. So, then the rule became 'you have 1 year to give a gift' I guess to make sure that the couple stays together.

At any rate, one of DH's aunts (who did not attend) is STILL waiving a potential gift in front of our faces. I REALLY want to say: 'give it a rest lady- you didn't RSVP, you didn't attend, you didn't send a card...it's been OVER A YEAR NOW...BUG OFF.'

ahh. thanks for the vent.

Yes, from one person. But they send it 8 months later.

Yes from five people out of a guest list of 95...

my brother
the best man
my cousin (his check bounced, we incurred a fee )
my brother's friend/my financial advisor (how's that for irony)
my cousin (claims it is very delicate and doesn't want to ship it... then drive your a$$ over to my house and drop it off)

This is a very sore subject with me because I think it is soooo rude.

My BIL still hasn't. We are married 7 years.

Re: No Gift?

I think we had 3, with 100 guests attending. I am not really all that concerned about it, and don't really expect to get anything at this point. I did get a few after the wedding (one person forgot the card and mailed it later, one just wanted to give it to us later.)

I don't always send a gift if I don't go to a wedding, and sometimes I send a gift when I haven't been invited. It depends on how close I am to the person who is getting married.

We had quite a few. And then there were the sort-of-non-gifters. Those people who are adults, living on their own, some even getting married themselves... and they went on their parents card

Including those people, we had a total of 8 non-gifters (10 guests total). I mean, there was not a person at my wedding that couldn't have afforded a 99cent card!

Re: No Gift?

this subject is way too touchy, if you bring it up, you seem like the money-hungry one. i guess ppl won't understand until it's their turn.

about the 1-year rule.. say the couple do split up, it doesn't negate the fact that the per person plate for the wedding costed so and so amount of dollars $. would you return monetary gifts after a year? i hope none of us have to face this situation, but just wondering...

i don't understand how some ppl have the nerve to show up empty-handed. i had one guest come with a date.. i thought i lost her gift so i called and asked , and she replies 'oh i gave you your gift at the SHOWER'.

I had one person not give a gift, but I know she's struggling with money, so I really could care less.
She was there at the wedding, she's in my pictures and I'm glad i was able to spend the day with her - so the way I look at it, her gift to me was being there with me

i had a few like that for my wedding, some didn't even give an empty card, let alone a gift. people are soooo shady!

Yes, we had about 4 pple stiff us. No card or nothin. Two of them I am really suprised about. In the TY's you are supposed to say Thanks for coming, and if they did send a gift, that indicates to them that you didnt get it

Yes! what annoys me is it was my dads cousin who is totally loaded and has no problem with gifts. Fine if she didnt give us a gift BUT she asked to bring a date(50 yr old proffessional man) and I said of course. what the heck is that...I paid for her and her date I dont even know. They should know better!
i never heard of that 1 yr rule but thats hilarious. Ive given engagement gifts to ppl that never got married. I didnt get them back! ; )

Re: No Gift?

ohhh. I didn't count the 'name on my mommy and daddy's card' people.

hmmm. One 33 (THIRTY THREE) year old guy.

another 23 year old guy. Another 21 year old guy. another 25 year old female, and another 45 (FORTY FIVE) year old man who is currently paying the full expense of his daughter's wedding...

in terms of the 1 year/ cost per plate thought...I did have a friend who got married and the marriage ended 10 months later. To be honest, I gave a gift for their marriage, not to cover my dinner. Although I wouldn't have taken the gift back, it would have been nice if they considered the possibility of returning the gifts. I mean- $100 for a shower gift and I didn't even attend the shower. Another $300 for the wedding gift- which we gave the day AFTER my DH was laid off from his job...

Re: No Gift?

Sorry to bring this back up...but I had 2 FG's. One is DH's little cousin, the other is DH's god daughter. Neither family gave a gift. One told us at the wedding 'you are on the waiting list'. Apparently they still haven't given DH's cousin who got married in June a gift.

We had two friends stiff us- thankfully neither of them brought a date!
As for returning gifts, ettiquette calls for you to return gifts AND money if the marriage fails within a year. Your gift is not you 'paying' to attend a wedding, it should be returned.

We have a whole bunch....but they are our friends who keep saying we still haven't gotten you a gift... doesn't really bug me considering we are still waiting for our thank yous to come in!!
