Noisy and Rude Neighbors - How do you deal with them?

Noisy and Rude Neighbors - How do you deal with them?

We have a single mom and her teenage son living above us. Asides from her regular stomping in heels on parquet floor and the dog scouling (sp?); we now have the teenage son having 'band' practice in the appt, around 10-10:30 at night.

The first time they were too loud we knocked on the door and rang their bell to ask them to quiet down. They did.

The second time (last night) they wouldn't answer the door. We called police, who didn't come for 45 minutes, at which point there was no longer a need for them, b/c the noise has stopped. FH also heard the mom stomping down the staircase and asked her have her son and friends be a little quieter, but the woman yelled saying its not 10 pm yet (it was), well its not 11 pm yet, and proceeding down the stairs cursing, etc. FH just let her go, b/c she was rude and ununderstanding from the beginning.

What do we do next? At the suggestion of NYC Meghan, I called the landlord and complained and they said they'll mail the letter to the offenders.

I think the landlord should definitely be told. Will you be moving soon. Is anyone else complaining?? Maybe you should get others in on this, get them to move. So sorry to hear, I know bad neighbors can make for such unhappy living.

Shamma, I don't want to move!!! We just moved there a little less than a year ago and I like the place a lot. The rent is good too, b/c we sub-rented it originally from a couple that was breaking their lease. But it looks like that 'family' has lived there for a while, and not someone there for a short period of time.

I'll try to see if I can talk to some other neighbors, but I don't really know them.

I am trying to resolve it 'peacefully' without violence.

I say sometimes we need a little force, let them know that you pay rent too and they have to be considerate of you. I think its a bit ridiculous to have someone drumming at 10 at night oh my word, what are they thinking, send the **** boy to the basement or do it during the day when no one is home. How inconsiderate can they be. They know what they are doing is wrong.

We had a problem with the people upstairs, they're an 80% carpeting rule in Queens, and they didnt' have it. I swear this women slept in platform shoes. She's up at 5:30 am and I hear her stomping around in her heals. And, they have a small child that runs around and jumps of hte bed early on weekend mornings. They also vacuum like 5x a day on the weekends starting at 7am.

I didn't know how to deal with it at first, so out of anger, I used to hit my ceiling with a broomstick!! Then I realized that was just getting them angry too!

Well, it took a long time for us to force them to get carpeting, and they only got wall to wall in the BR, but I still hear her shoes in the hallway and LR (and the vacuum). I just had to learn to accept that this is what it's like to live in an apt. building, since I grew up in a house.

I think with the drums, you def. have a right to call the police after 10pm.

Niha, we got used to the stomping heels (does the same carpeting rule apply to Brooklyn, anyone know?) and the dog.

I don't even mind the band music when they blast it during the day on weekends. But 10:30pm on Tuesday night is not acceptable...

Police didn't come. Its a low priority 'job' for them.

I do not know the carpet rule. My GF in North Carolina had that same problem, she said it was like a bunch of rhinos. We are very considerate when we walk, its not fair to your neighbors and you would not want it done to you. Speak up Alina, don't take it just so

I'm not sure if the 80% carpet thing is a law or not (my old coop building it was in the lease) but in my last apartment...we had complete hardwood floors..

my crazy neighbor used to play really loud 1940's music at 6 am (b/c she said that we put our toilet seat down too loudly!!!) you could try that...

LOL Yabbo, how funny (at least now)

FH and I were considering doing something like that, but wouldn't that start a 'noise' war?

Re: Noisy and Rude Neighbors - How do you deal with them?

I was going to say do it back too, but no one would have any peace, so the best route to go is to talk to them again and then tell the landlord if it does not cease.

Shamma, that was FH's solution too. He suggested all kind of pranks to play on them... But we're not in college dorms no more.

Alina, I agree with you, this is not college and you are paying rent and you deserve to be treated as such and not have to live in a noise box. I hope it gets resolved, b/c your home is where you are supposed to go for solace not a place you want to avoid. Let us know how it turns out.

Alina,

I live in a co-op and they pretty much enforce the 80% carpeting rule and I live in Queens. I had the same problem with my neighbor upstairs. Initally I was told she was allergic to the carpeting and that's why she didn't have any. She would also vaccum the bare floor and her vacuum against it would sound like a truck rolling over my head on Saturday morning at 6am!

Anyway I sent repeatedly letters to management and I have not heard a peep out of her in 2 months. I suggest pursuing management/landlord about the problem. Keep on them if it doesn't stop.

I agree with Irenie's suggestion sending letters to the mgmt co./landlord. I am sure the lease has some sort of time frame for loud noises and carpeting.

My dh and I have been harrassed by our downstairs neighbor for months now - with no cause - calling in the middle of the night while we are sleeping to complain about noise and banging on the ceiling if we drop something by accident.

Niha - you are right that banging on the ceiling will only infuriate the people upstairs!!!

We complained to mgmt and they are addressing the woman downstairs and consulting an atty about quality of life issues since she is making it impossible for other people to reasonably enjoy their homes. (she has a lot of other issues too)

Good luck

Ok, so we'll keep pursuing the landlord/police routes.

Thank you all girls... No noise last night...

Re: Noisy and Rude Neighbors - How do you deal with them?

I agree - don't start a noise war...the lady did with us...and things were never the same...until she moved (and the coop board threw a party b/c she was finally gone...lol)

I think dealing in a calm and professional manner is the best thing to do...

once youve talked to them (like you have) start talking to the landlord...
