Now that your married....

how are you dealing with the holiday/family situation?

Re: Now that your married....

same as before, nothing really changed:
Thanksgiving: Dinner at my families, dessert at his
Christmas: Eve and morning and a brief stop at my aunts, then dinner/dessert at DH's familys place.
Luckily, the furtherest we travel is SMithtown to Hicksville, not to bad.

When we have kids, I'm sure it will change.

So you are going to go up there on Christmas eve and drive back for christmas

As for us, its a lot easier because we are interfaith:
Thanksgiving: my parents
Christmas Eve/Christmas: his parents
Hanukkah (very informal): my parents

No, we fly Jet Blue on Xmas Day for CHEAP! The flight up is usually more, but airlines seem to think no one wants to travel on the actualy holiday, so we fly back to NYC in the early morning to have present and dinner with DHs family. It's worked for the last 2 years! :fingers crossed:

My DH family are all in TEXAS -- its going to be more interesting when we have kids for sure. They dont celebrate as formally as we do - so ive been lucky that he has been agreeable to staying here in NY. this year i think we'll do xmas eve at my moms (its her big holiday) and xmas day we will fly to tx -- it will be hectic. I just dont want to give up the holidays when my family goes all out to go down there where they are SO informal and barely get together. Its gonna suck when we have kids waahh

Re: Now that your married....

We're doing the same thing we did before we were married...

We basically rotate holidays because we live in Massachusetts (where DH's family lives) and my parents live in NY. Doing dinner at one house and dessert at the other is just not an option for us.

This year, we're doing Thanksgiving with my family and Easter with his. Next year we'll do Thanksgiving with his family and Easter with mine.

For Christmas, we spend Christmas Eve in Boston with my DH's family (they're Italian so they make a way bigger deal about Christmas Even than the actual day). Then we wake up at the crack of dawn on Christmas Day (after being up until past midnight with his family), load our two dogs in the car and drive to NY to spend Christmas Day with my family. It's a total pain, and we definitely won't be doing this any more once we have kids.

It's so hard trying to make everyone happy!

Re: Now that your married....

We live in VA and we do Christmas with my family in NY every year..There is no way I could ever imagine spending it anywhere else since my family has traditions for X-mas eve, X-mas day and the day after X-mas and DH's family doesn't even put up a tree!!!!! As a result we do Thanksgiving, Easter and New Years day with DHs family. DH keeps telling me that after we have kids we can't go to NY anymore...it may be grounds for divorce...j/k

Sadly DH doesn't have much family left, and those who are still around he isn't that close with.

So all holidays are with my family. The only thing we have to question is whether or not we have his daughter.

Nothing has changed.

Thanksgiving week : We are headed down to Hilton Head, SC with DH's family for the week! It is a big reunion that we have down there

Christmas Eve : DH's grandparents house with his family

Christmas : With my parents at either our house or theirs. Unfortunately my brother, nephew & SIL won't be there as they want my nephew to have his 2nd xmas in their new home in Maine

Re: Now that your married....

I posted something about this last week. I have a major problem this year (which really doesn't have anything to with being married because we've done holidays together for the past 3 years).

Normally we do:
Thanksgiving: My family on Long Island
Christmas Eve: DH's SMIL and siblings and then dinner with my parents at their house in NYC
Christmas Day: My family on Long Island.

Now, this year, DH is working 8-4 on all three holidays! So, as of now it looks like this:
Thanksgiving: Stay home by myself til he gets h ome
Christmas Eve: Dinner with my parents at their apartment in NYC
Christmas Day: Stay home by myself til he gets home and then we may see SMIL and the kids.
Boxing Day (HA!): My boss gave me off and DH has off so we can see each other!!

So, do I skip the 5+ hour (round trip) drive by myself and not get to see DH til later on T-day and Xmas Day. Maybe I am being bratty, but I am preggo and I don't really want to do it.

Re: Now that your married....

We try and stick with one year X-mas at my family the next with his, then with mine...so far so good. As for the others we are so far from my side we go to his family when we get the chance. We don't always get to since he is in the service and sometimes has duty, like this Thanksgiving.

Re: Now that your married....

We alternate every year, even when we were dating. Like last year we spent X-Mass with his family and they day with mine. This year we will spend the Eve with my family and the day with his. The same with Thanksgiving & Easter, whatever we do the year before we just switch.
