Re: NW's that went to Hawaii - Did you get American Express Travellers Checks when you went?
We used all cash. We had 2 travelers checks that we had gotten as gifts and we used them to pay for the hotels.

Nope. We brought some cash (not too much) used our ATM card a couple times but put almost everything on our CC.

I didnt go on my HM but we just went in Feb. No need for travelers check. Just bring a little pocket money and use ATMs and CC for the rest.

We had gotten some when we got to Oahu, but we really didn't need them at all. They were actually a pain because he signed all of them so I could not use them only he could.

Re: NW's that went to Hawaii - Did you get American Express Travellers Checks when you went?
IMO, they are obsolete. With atm's you can get cash anywhere very easily so there's no need to bother with traveller's checks.

1. what if i lose my money and my atm card
2. my atm is chase which is not on hawaii therefore i have to pay a surcharge
I don't see why they are not recommended.

Re: NW's that went to Hawaii - Did you get American Express Travellers Checks when you went?
I don't understand how people say travellers checks are obsolete. My fiance does not have a credit card. I do. So that means I have to be with him at all times if he wants to pay for something?
What if I lose the cash? Or the credit card?
What do you do then?
American Express Travellers checks are replaceable and that is the beaty of using them.
I can get my atm replaced but i don't know if they will send it to me in hawaii. I know the travellers checks will be sent to me there because that is their policy.
that's why i don't want to use 'just cash and atms'
i'm surprised most of you didn't mind the surcharge of the atms. i personally would think twice about bringing that large amount of cash with me to the airport.

if you want to use the TCs, then you should! Most people nowadays have CCs, so I think that's why for many, the TCs are obsolete.
But if you'd prefer to bring them, then go for it.

Reading what you wrote, I think if TC make you feel more safe, you should get them.
Personally, I don't like them. They take more time to cash and deal with than cash, debit or cc's. But both DH and I have cc's and our own checking/debit accounts and that is what we have used for all vacations - not just in Hawaii on our honeymoon. I haven't gotten a TC in over 10 years! When I do carry a significant amount of cash, I don't normally keep it all in my wallet or all in the same bag - just in case. As far atm fees, they aren't a big factor to us. DH and I are very good at budgeting our money - so we don't have to go to them very often. We go maybe once ot twice and budget it for the trip and use hotel safes to store some of our cash so we aren't carrying it all at once. but we try to use cc's when applicable.
Even in DR I lost my wallet in the airport going down (I never lose things either!) and I was fine. I had no cash, id, cc, debit card. not sure how I got thru customs both way because I didn't have a passport - all I had was my birth certificate. I was fortunate that DH had all his stuff and we were ok. I called home and told my mom what I had in my wallet and she was able to pose as me to at least cancel my credit cards and atm. If this were to happened to you and your DH didn't have a cc or debit card - it would be a pain. Maybe TC's would be an option for you.

Thanks....maybe FH should get the TC in his name and I can use my CC's.He's an immigrant (working towards his green card, he does have a his work permit and SS number though) and just hasn't gotten around to getting a bank account or a CC yet since he got his SS number.
