My ex-supervisor of speech sent this video to me and all of her ex- speech teachers. Its a video by five for fighting which provides us with statistics and facts about autism. Each time the video is viewed .49 cents will be donated by the group to Autism Speaks which will get used to find a cure for Autism.
thanks so much for sharing...this site & what its doing for funding IS something that needs to be passed around..

Re: NWR-Autism Awareness
this is very moving.....but unfortuanately, (and I'm sure I'll get roasted for this), I think a lot of diagnoses are false......and since each child is 'diagnosed differently:' and 'insurance policiese don't cover everything'' I think a lot of cases are misdiagnosed. My personal belief is that this is a business, like a lot other things in this messed up society. Yes, a lot of children are legitimately diagnosed as autistic, but a lot of them are ruled 'autistic' when they are nothing more then devolping and have some unusual behaviors. This is a new phoneomenon with percentages quadrupeling in the past 5 years....I think its a big BUSINESS. Sorry....but that is my opionion. I cannot in good concience, give my dollars here over cancer or diabetes....because I truly believe that a lot of these kids are diagnosed and over treated for acting strangely.....when they are just developing. I should know......bc i was one of them.

Re: NWR-Autism Awareness
While I agree with PP on the misdiagnosis-I think its unfair to state its a business. There are children that are actually autistic and will spend the rest of their lives never saying a word, screaming when they want something and never being able to tell their parents they love them.
YES some are misdiagnosed, but I know 2 children who can not function as human beings and are at the age now where they never will. Money to benefit help for these children isnt just to offer help for those that are autistic, its to further tests and science for this issue, its to find the cause so we can be aware of the problem early, its also to find a cure or a help for these children who will never do 99% of the things you and I have done in our lives-thepoint would raise money so that its easier to diagnose and diagnose it better. Just as with Cancer and diabetes there had to be tests, etc. to find out the causes and how to regulate or help it.
Yes, doctors diagnose children with a million things that are BS, I think that ADD is crap, do I believe that children are excited and cant sit and pay attention, etc. absolutely. Do I believe that we have a problem with adolescent obesity...yes....BUT take the cheeseburger from your child and give them a salad. i believe that parenting is to blame on those things-totally off topic there.
ok, im done

Re: NWR-Autism Awareness
That was very touching. I know someone with an autistic child and who raises awareness for autism. It is a real issue and there ARE many children affected by it. Are there misdiagnoses? Sure, aren't there misdiagnoses for other diseases all the time??? Maybe the fact that the number of diagnoses has quadrupled (or whatever the actual statistic is) in the last few years has to do with the fact that now doctors are more equipped with the knowledge of what autism is and how to diagnose it. Maybe there were always the same number of children with autism, but they were never diagnosed properly. Or maybe different environmental (or other) factors have increased the occurrence of autism in children. Whatever the case, there ARE many children affected by this and the more awareness and money goes into research, the more likely it is that one day we'll know better what causes it and how to treat it.

I understand that this is just your opinion, but to call ADD crap is really wrong. My step son has ADHD with characteristics of Autism - there is much more to it than not being able to sit still. It is about not being able to make connections, not being able to comprehend concepts, not being able to carry on a conversation. It is frustrating and heart breaking to see a child like this and not know what to do to be able to help him/her. All diseases have instance of wrong diagnosis, but that does not make them un-real. I challenge to spend one day with a child who has ADD/ADHD and then call it crap.
