So my dog decided to be a jerk and he jumped up onto the kitchen table and ate chocolate chip cookies. He had about 10 of those little Entemman's ones. Now I'm freaking out that he'll get sick! I called the emergency animal hospital and they said he should be fine but I can't stop worrying. I just walked him up and down the block hoping he'd poop but he didn't.
Has anyone had a similar situation with their dog?
BTW he's a lab/golden mix about 70 pounds.

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
I'm a 4th year vet student, and don't worry he will be totally fine! A dog (especially a 70 pounder) has to eat ALOT of chocolate (and really pure bakers chocolate is more of an issue than the fake chocolate chip things in cookies) to have any sort of major problem. The only thing you may get is a little soft stool..if that. HTH

Thank you soooo much for responding. I'm a nervous mommy I can't help it!
He has a very sensitive stomach so I worry whenever he eats anything out of the ordinary

I am not a vet but my sisters 65lb golden retriever has stolen a lot of candy, cookies and choc cake in her lifetime. She just gets real bad gas and sometimes gets the runs. try not to worry he will be fine

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
we feed my family dog (65 lb. german shepard) oreo cookies and chocolate chip cookies several times a week. we've always done it -- with all our dogs. chocolate can actually be good for dogs. Unless he happened to eat an enitre bag of pure chocolate, he'll be fine.

Your baby should be fine! A few months back my 4 lb chihuahua ate 2 full reesces peanut butter cups and I was freakin out! I called the emergency doggie poison control hotline wanting to know if I should rush her to the emergency vet and they said not to worry! I know how scary that is! Hope everythings ok!

I don't mean to be contrary, but chocolate is lethal to dogs. Obviously large doses will be more dangerous than just a few chocolate chips in a few cookies, especially for a 70 lb dog (he'll be ok!!!), but I would hate for someone to read this and think chocolate is good for dogs - dogs have died from eating one chocolate bar. That's wonderful that your dogs have been able to eat chocolate with no side effects, but it's proven to be very dangerous to dogs.

that is so true!! my dog ate a lot of chocolate once and we caled the emergency vet, they told us if he doesn't throw up or his gums don't turn white within a few hours hes okay, but I've heard of dogs eating just one choclate bar and dying!!! So I'd say to other people with Dogs I don't think its reccomended to feed your dog chocolate, or table foods for that matter. Their bodies are totally different then ours and don't break down human foods the same. (thats what my vet told us)

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
I'm sure he'll be fine. I'm sure my dog has snuck some chocolate (among many other things-including eggshells!?!?!) here and there and he lived a long, healthy life. ETA: Not to downplay the seriousness of chocolate and dogs, just commenting that my dog was into everything when we weren't looking and was okay.

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
Our miniature schnauzer once ate an entire box of Godiva chocolate!! We were freaking-thought we were definitely going to lose her. But oddly enough, no effect on her.
But yes, chocolate can be lethal to dogs.

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
he'll be fine! Unless it's a VERY large amount, the only thing chocolate does to doggies is give them a little tummy ache & some diarrehea(lovely i know) if they can't handle it....it's not anything serious if it's only a few entemanns vs. a 70lb lab! no worries

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
It's Baker chocolate that is leathal in smaller doses. Dark cholcolate is real bad too but the semi sweet chips in the cookie won't kill. At least this is what my vet explained ot me.

Re: NWR: Freaking out about my dog
Thanks for all your advice. He turned out to be just fine. I barely slept though...I sat up most of the night watching him sleep.
Maybe I'll have to take a nap with pup before his daddy gets home!
