NWR--How Tacky is This?

I don't usually post about the problems of friends, but this one is bothering me, and I need to vent about it with people who are not involved in the issue or friends with the people involved. It is somewhat wedding related, though not entirely.

My friend's ex-husband has come into some money recently. While they were together, he pretty much lived off of her, and even demanded (and unfortunately due to their state's divorce laws) got more money from her when they divorced.

Most of the money he has came from a lawsuit he won for an accident he was in several years ago. My friend was still married to him at the time, and treked to his hospital every day, put up with his selfish demands, and researched rehabilitation centers for him. Legally, I think (though I don't know for sure) she would be entitled to a share of this money since they were married when the accident happened, and she supported him through his recovery. He has offered her no money, not one dime, not even a gift, and when she asked him about this, he told her it's his, she's not getting any. She doesn't feel like pursuing this legally at this time, which I think is foolish, but that's her business.

Now, he remarried someone he met a few months ago. They were on the verge of breaking up apparently, and the next time my friend heard from him, they were engaged. She told me they were engaged three weeks ago, and since then they have gotten married. He bought the new wife an engagement ring, a house, paid for the wedding, and took the new wife on a honeymoon to an expensive resort in the Caribbean. To top it all off, he emailed photos of his honeymoon trip to my friend! Plus, he never took her on trips, did not buy her a traditional diamond ring, etc.

I'm really annoyed with him on her behalf. I feel like he's rubbing her face in it, and while this is her problem and she has to deal with it, I mind what he's doing for her. I've already told her I think she should stop opening his emails, and what I think she should do about the money. At this point, I think I have to let it go, and let her deal with it or not, as she chooses. Any suggestions?

wow, that's some story!!

first of all, her ex husband is 1st class jack@ss! I can't believe that he would have the nerve to send her pics from their HM! what a CREEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that alone would send me to a lawyer for consultation just to see if I was entitled to any of this money. does she know how much he got? he could say he spent it all, etc. this would get REALLY UGLY though!!

As much as he is a complete jerk, your friend isn't entitled to any money he won from the settlement for a personal injury. Even if she were married to him, she wouldn't be entitled to monies. It's specifically mentioned as property not subject to community property laws as well.

I feel bad for your friend, but she should just move on and let laying dogs; lay.

I was all set to tell you to tell your friend to just forget it and move on. Then I read the part about the e-mails. That changes everything and whatever she does is fair game!

He's an huge azz. Especially for sending her pics. She needs to cut this toxic person out of her life completely and move on. Not only should she forget the money for this reason, but legally, I don't think she's entitled to any of it and she couldn't sue for it.

Money that you win from a lawsuit has legal restrictions on it from what I know. My brother and I were in an accident that we got some money from when I was a minor and my parents were not allowed to lay a finger on it. It also couldn't be counted as income when I did my financial aid stuff for college and it couldn't be taxed.

Thanks for all of your replies and suggestions. He is a tremendous ***, but at least my friend is no longer married to him, and she has the satisfaction of knowing she was the one to end the marriage.

I was thinking she might be entitled to some $$$, but if not, she should just move on and forget about him.

It seems like she doesn't even want to deal with it at this point. I feel bad for her too, but she has to make the decision. She should consult a lawyer and see if she has a case.
