NWR: what does Upstate bring to mind for you

I'm just curious, I saw a post on another site from someone in LI talking about what upstate NY is like and it was waaaaaaaaaay off base, so it got me thinking, what do people from NYC/LI think Upstate is like?

Quiet with lots of rain and snow!

DH is from upstate (Syracuse area) and his mom and sister, along with her family, still live there. It's nice. The downtown area is cute and there are a few nice retsurants...I also love the Carousel Mall

When we went up there in the summer the weather was great and it was sunny and clear everyday. We even saw a few shooting stars

I think snow and grey. I lived in Rochester for 4 years and hated every minute of it. It would have been OK it wasn't dark all summer and snowing all winter (and the violent crime capital of the country!).

It brings back memories of skiing with HD and friends and going away every year with my MatOH and her family, and working at the opera house in Cooperstown for the summer.

It also reminds me of a lot of snow, yet more quiet and peaceful depending on where you go.

This came out as a load question, sorry about that, I was a little PO'd when I read what was said about this area and it came out in my question.

Someone on another site was asking about re-location to the capital district because they had a job offer and someone from LI had posted that they couldn't be paid enough to move upstate because it is really depressed housing/job wise.

While that may be true of certain areas, it isn't the case for the majority of the state, especially not the capital district. I work in civil engineering (which is an industry that is very dependent on local economy) and we can't seem to hire enough people to keep up with our workload.

The post just made me a little sad/upset and I was wondering if people really think Upstate is a depressed area?

I'm sorry that the question came across the way it did at first.

That's where I went to school. I don't blame you for not wanting to visit there.

i went to school upstate for 3 years so to me it mostly means quaint towns, rainy falls, snowy winters, and beautiful springs. i loooove upstate so much i wish i could move there but i have to stay here for my job - and DH would never ever go north, only south.

i actually have friends that live in albany and i have been there several times. there are some really terrible, low-income, dangerous, dirty areas there - but that is true of just about every city in the US. there are also some gorgeous, fun, bright parts of albany, and i would go back to visit my friends in a heartbeat - so long as i didn't have to go back to the area they just moved out of! scary!

I think of skiing!! And men with beards and flannel lots and lots of flannel I know that is way off but it's fun to pretend. It is gorgeous upstae and after going in the winter we always say we have to go back in the summer but we never do. I would love to check it out in the summer.

I went to a concert in Albany. We drove up the day of and we loved it because a Dennys was right by our hotel. Sadly I associate our State Capitol with Denny's! You have gotta love The Den

i can't lie--when i think of 'upstate' i think of my uber WT SIL and her entire WT family. my brother married into TPT.

my SIL thinks that spending more than $6 on a bra is 'outrageous' (she buys most if not all her clothes from wal-mart)

Nascar = the greatest sport in the world for them

supping up your snow blower is cool

the last wedding they attended up there for family--the bride got into a fist fight with her mom, and wound up walking down the street sh*tfaced drunk in her gown

I have GOT to meet these people that is awesome!!!

BTW Did you confuse upstae with Alabama?

Re: NWR: what does Upstate bring to mind for you

yeah there is a neighborhood in Albany called Arbor Hill - it sounds pretty but I wouldn't live there, but then again just a few blocks from that is the Mansion area around Washington Park where houses sell for millions, It's strange how much neighborhoods can change over a couple of blocks.

Saratoga is 1/2 hour north of Albany and although it's hard to find a 'bad' area in Saratoga, there are parts of the city where new construction will start at $350,000 and other's where it starts closer to $1.5M. We just did a subdivision in Saratoga where the cheapest house sold for $1.7M

MJDOC- holy **** lady! That's an interesting family

...and where the he// do they sell $6 bras???

you'd THINK, right???

dude when we visit them--we go to her parents house--and driving down their street all you see are garages with nascar driver numbers on them! 2 houses down has the big old '3' on it with the colors and stuff

i swear i never realized how much its possible to have 'northern' rednecks until he married them. they've been married for like 12 years now and i still get shocked when i go there!!!

last time DH and i went--their idea of fun was sitting around a bonfire that they created in the backyard....using wood palettes they grabbed from the back of the freaking wal-mart down the road.

then to REALLY kick it up a notch---they took empty beer bottles--filled them with gasoline and then placed them strategically into the fire with the cap put back on -- and waited for it to explode

yeah--it was good time...NOT!

I live there now (DH and I both work for RIT) and I really love it. LI was nice and I still love it but I love that things are much calmer up here. I'm really enjoying it.
