I'm just curious, I saw a post on another site from someone in LI talking about what upstate NY is like and it was waaaaaaaaaay off base, so it got me thinking, what do people from NYC/LI think Upstate is like?

Wow, I live 20 minutes from Albany in Saratoga County and I've never seen anything like that!
I mean I;ve seen NASCAR flags before, but never a souped up snowblower or exploding beer can bonfires, that's just crazy!

yeah i know they are not the 'norm' up there. but unfortunately my experience with all their family and stuff---its just so redneck. i mean hell--even their names sound hilariosuly rednecky.....(i say this cause i lived in the south for awhile and besides them, i've only heard of southerners with these names) 'Jimmy Joe' and her cousin is 'Billy Joe' , her other cousin is 'Sally Sue'
Two sisters from the same family---married two brothers from another family---and then bought houses next door to each other and created their WT dynasty. its quite a train wreck

I grew up on Long Island, went to school in Binghamton and now live in Albany and teach in a rural school in Greene county. My DH is from Duchess County and I have many friends from Rockland and Westchester Counties. Therefore, any judgments I make about 'upstate' really depends on the region.

Posted by Nina_m74 i actually have friends that live in albany and i have been there several times. there are some really terrible, low-income, dangerous, dirty areas there - but that is true of just about every city in the US. there are also some gorgeous, fun, bright parts of albany, and i would go back to visit my friends in a heartbeat - so long as i didn't have to go back to the area they just moved out of! scary!
i went to school there and lived in the areas you mentioned!!! it was good fun..everyone lived there from suny.. cheap and near the bars.. not sure what its like now..
but there are some nice parts around the albany area.. crossgates mall is great mall there!!! just depends where you go and what you are looking for and used too.. you are near saratoga, lake george , skiing.. MA - you cant go wrong around there..

My in-laws live in Orange County, so not too far upstate. We visit them a lot and my impression is that upstate is really nice! Very different from NYC... I think of it as quieter, safer, everything more spread out, lots of trees/forests... I really like it there. Very pretty & I love visiting.

Solitude and healthy eating!! Our friends live upstate and the closest McDodonalds in a freakin 30 minute drive and Taco Bell id 45 minutes!! SHOOT ME!!

peace & quiet with lots of woods & NICE people :) i went upstate this past summer and it was beautiful...we went to this little remote breakfast place where this little old lady did all the cooking - she was SO cute!

We also went to a breakfast place where the lady who sat us, took our order, went in the back and cooked our food, and then served us and rang us up!! It was too funny!! And it's attached to the town's post office!!

Houses that have acres instead of sq footage. Just trees and acres and acres of land and scenery. Quiet, no ambient light so more stars, nature, animals. I would love to live upstate, but DH doesn't want to move off the Island cause his mom is here. My parents will be OOT soon, but our friends are here, so I know it would be hard but LI is just so expensive

upstate reminds me of college! DH and I met at ithaca college. i spent 5 yrs up there and they were easily the best 5 yrs of my life, for a million reasons. ithaca is so beautiful, with all of the gorges (ithaca IS gorges afterall ), the commons, rolling hills, cayuga lake, the vineyards, i could go on. and there a tons of towns upstate just like it!! granted, there are plenty of WT places upstate, but seriously, there are plenty of WT places on LI too!
