I can only imagine the fear and hurt you are going through but this is not your fault.
My nephew is autistic & like you, my sister was devastated. But with time. love, education and help, you might be able to help him. My nephew has an aide that helps him and he is just like every other kid.

It's okay. Hang in there. Things will be fine! I know right now it is very overwhelming, but you can do it. Early intervention is key!!
Please, please, PLEASE get yourself the Jenny McCarthy book 'Louder than Words'
get it RIGHT NOW. It is so uplifting and hopeful. Great info on diets and therapies. It is AMAZING!! Her son had severe autism and now he is articulate and in a regular education setting.
If you have ANY questions, feel free to FM me. I work with many children with autism. I swear to god, everything will be okay. Maybe not the way you planned, but you will be okay! Autism is a spectrum disorder so no two children are the same. Don;t think your child will be totally antisocial because that isn't definitive. Don;t worry about the 'what ifs'.. You & Darren & Blake will do wonderfully.

im so sorry you are dealing with this... hang in there and like you said.. he is not different.. he is just like everyone else!! he is your special boy! nobody can take that away from you!! hang in there!!

I know that nothing we can say will make this any easier but often with early intervention, enough progress can be made to make the effects lessen. You guys will be ok!

I am a part time teacher/school administrator. I used to be the disabilities coordinator for a Head Start program. Please fm me if you would like to talk.
There is a whole range of emotions that parents go through when an autism diagnosis is made. Make sure that you and DH are taking good care of yourselves and spending some grown up time together.
I'm sure that you are searching for a reason why your son has to face the challenge. Please don't blame yourselves. Children develop in an amazing variety of ways. The best test in the world can at best only give a snapshot of a child on a particular day. There is nothing that can measure a child's true potential. The good news is that there is SO much that can be done to help autistic children at a young age. You guys are right on target and your son is lucky to have you advocating for him.

I'm sorry you're going through a tough time. There are so many resources available now. My step-brother is autistic and is also one of the brightest in some areas. Make sure you find out what services are available to you. Early Intervention is something you should start as soon as possible. It had a tremendous impact on him. There's also a school in Kings Park/Smithtown that helped him significantly. I can find out the name if you want. Feel free to FM me if you want to talk.

Autism is VERY common in boys these days. (frightenly common) My sister works with a lot of autistic children and she's pretty knowledgable on the subject if you wanted to talk to someone.
There are varying degrees...
You should post on the LIF parenting boards. I know there are other moms on there who have autistic children.

i am a special education teacher, so PLEASE let me know if i can offer any support, guidance, answer some questions.
I know it's hard now, but autism is NOT a life sentence. i have had many high functioning children with autism....there are soooo many varying degrees of the disorder.
Also, your child is eligible for early intervention services NOW!!! So much can be done the earlier you get services. Contact your school district ASAP and request an evalaution. With a diagnosis of autism, he will receive services, usually speech therapy and ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) depending on the severity.
