Re: NY Post Cartoon
While I don't understand what the heck they were trying to get at - I don't think it was intentionally offensive. Just a stupid, not funny, not insightful political cartoon.
It was like 'hey lets take two news stories and put them in the same cartoon - we are clever.'

Re: NY Post Cartoon
...doesn't think that there's any room in New York for an openly racist newspaper like the post.
this was my friends status update this morning and now I am assuming he was referring to this cartoon

Re: NY Post Cartoon
My issue is that no matter what they are insinuating it is WRONG. I dont want to get into the racial aspect of it for now, but are they saying to kill our President? or to poke fun at that poor woman who lost her eyes, nose and jaws when she was attacked by the chimp? I dont see the funny in any of the 3 possible scenarios they were trying to portray.

i agree! no matter if they were just trying to make a joke, IMO it went TOO far
me and DH were watching the news story about it last night and my first reaction was and wow NOT cool.... i understand that people poke fun at the president and all the current politics issues, and thats fine - but to me, it was REALLY tasteless and went wayyy over the top

i read a few different things about this cartoon - that the chimp isnt supposed to be portraying the president b/c he didn't write the bill or something to that effect - that its supposed to represent the house or something like that....BUT even if that is the case you are right its still poking fun of the whole chimpanzee thing that happened and i don't think that was funny at all - not for the poor woman who got hurt, not the for owner of the chimp (whether its right or wrong to own a chimp she still had a pet that went nuts, hurt her friend and now is dead - that has to be really hard to go through), and its sad for the chimp too b/c he was only an animal.....so i don't think it was in good taste no matter how you look at it.....especially when its something that could be interperted too many ways....

ps - i also think that the post is like the tabloids of newspapers.... when the whole elliot spitzer thing surfaced, the cover of the post said: 'HO NO'
sorry but i have no respect for the post and would NEVER read it

Yeah you are so right about the Tabloid of the papers. That used to be my newspaper of choice just bc I could always get the jist of the story and a ton of sarcasm.

I think that the cartoon is in bad tast! I think Tilde is right that they just put two news stories together.. But SOMEONE should have thought about what it was saying before it was printed.
It is in bad taste.

To me the first two things that popped in my head was are they freaking nuts: Comparing a black man to a monkey and making fun of this poor woman that got attacked. I also agree with you about feeling bad for the owner of the pet. She must also be hurting and feeling extremely guilty.

I think it was in poor taste. How many different ideas can we come up with what the cartoonist means?
