on your W-4, do you claim 0 or 1

Original post by Espo22

I am curious what everyone has done since they got married. Did you stay with 0 or did you change it to 1. I always get annoyed about how much they take out in taxes each paycheck and then after you do your taxes you get so little back in comparison to what they took out. So i kept saying I was going to do 1 but i havent lol. For my new job i had to fill it out and i was so confused about what to do. I was afraid that with 1, i could end up owing too much money and not being worth it, if it was a little might be worth it if i got to take home alot more each paycheck. Dh stayed on 0 also and didnt change it.

I claimed 1 but after the wedding and paperwork I changed to 0 because I really don't want to owe money. I might owe money from my previous job but I'm not sure. I mean it wouldn't be terrible but I'd rather not pay money.

I think we both claim 0. We're not changing anything until we meet with our accountant next month.

It really depends on what tax bracket you fall into. When I was living with my parents, I had to claim 0 because I made too much money and couldn't right off the interest on my school loans But now that we own a home and I am paying tuition, I claim 1.

I claim Married 0. I may change back to single 1 depending on my tax refund this year. Last year my accountant said either DH or myself should keep single so we didn't get slammed. I need to make an appointment soon though and i will talk to him again

You can't change it back to single. You keep it as married, you can just file separately. When we meet with our accountant he is going to determine how we will end up with the most money, if it's filing separately or together.

I have always claimed Single 1. When I file my income taxes then I will claim Married. The difference with the 0 and 1 withholding on a paycheck is a lot, but on the return is not too much so claiming 1 works best for me.

oh wait so there isnt a big difference with your return whether you claim 0 or 1. WOW then i should do 1. What i do know is that with 1 you get less taken out of your paycheck so you get more money each paycheck which is great bc i also heard that it is a big difference. But i was just worried bc some ppl said with claiming 1 you could end up owing money and thats only thing i was afraid of, but if thats not a problem then i want to change it to 1

I do accounting for a living and I always claim 1. Unless you are in a different salary bracket then you will not owe money by filing 1 instead of 0. When you file your taxes do you itemize? If you itemize you will always (well for the most part) get money back by filing 1. There are A LOT of things that can be itemized that people dont do and that's why they tend to pay money back to the govnt.

d*mn i knew i should've done 1, but i was kinda put on the spot and got afraid. When it comes to this its like people give their opinions without really knowing i guess, but thank you. Im gonna try to change it soon

I kept mine as 0. I did 1 when I was in high school and one year I ended up owing like $200. I was like a junior in high school. So I cried and threw a hissy fit. I think my dad paid it but I was still mad cus I was in high school and $200 was a lot.

I claim 0. I hope this is correct, my commission was taxed incorrectly last year so I had to pay out 3k ... I hope we get money back this year since we are now married and home owners

hmmm I just realized I dont know who is doing my taxes this year. My dad wont be able to and I dunno if my brother in law who is an accountant will have time. I am not buying the software and doing it myself cus there is no way im doing them- that just freaks me out!!! Are there places that do it cheap?? DH and I cant spend much on that sort of thing right now...we are trying to be careful with our spending.

i've always used turbotax.com and it's worked just fine! i think there is a like a $30 charge. i started doing our joint return for this year so hopefully it will be just as easy as it was when i was single!
