I am curious what everyone has done since they got married. Did you stay with 0 or did you change it to 1. I always get annoyed about how much they take out in taxes each paycheck and then after you do your taxes you get so little back in comparison to what they took out. So i kept saying I was going to do 1 but i havent lol. For my new job i had to fill it out and i was so confused about what to do. I was afraid that with 1, i could end up owing too much money and not being worth it, if it was a little might be worth it if i got to take home alot more each paycheck. Dh stayed on 0 also and didnt change it.

i claim 4-
i can use my money now not just a lump sum in feb- i have been claiming that even before we were married- it did not make much differece becasue of the amount i make (not much )
and i still got some back last year- but i also have a child i can claim- i would talk to the person who does your taxes and see what they say.

Hmmm...I can't remember what I put. I know that after we got married, my paycheck changed from single to married (and went up like $400 per month.) I think I claim 1, but I do have an additional $50 withheld from my check each month just to be sure I don't have to pay at the end of the year. {Yes, I only get paid 1X per month and it S*CKS!}

i was looking up info and then read some people say NOT to file as married but 0 bc that is bad and to stay as the single 0. Dont know why its bad to say married and still put 0, i think they meant bc of owing money, but then i saw other answers too, so i wonder what would be best.
Yeah like you, what i get back every paycheck is more important to me right now than what i get back once a year bc seriously it does nothing. It would help me out alot more if i get back more each paycheck, now that would make a difference in my life lol. BUT at the same time i dont want to owe alot of money to the IRS when i have to do my taxes. Do you ever have to owe them money? and if so is it alot?

yes thats the advice someone else gave, they said to make sure they withhold an additional $50 to make sure you dont pay alot at the end of the year. How do you get them to take out that additional $50? 400 extra each paycheck is real good. Hmmm now i am even more confused lol

it just s*cks bc i know with 0 around what i'll get back and about how much will be taken out of each paycheck. I just have no clue about it when you claim 1. Guess i'll wait to ask my tax guy, although i wanted to know before i got paid so i could change it just in case. Well i guess i can call him lol

This thread just made me realize that I don't think DH and I changed it! Is that bad? So we are both single 0.

this is exactly me! i kept meaning to change my claim to 1 but never did and now it's almost tax time! somebody told me that one spouse should claim 1 and one should claim 0 and then you don't get screwed at tax time. honestly, i don't really understand it all, i'm just hoping we get $$ back when we file our taxes. oh, also, i think somebody told me that once you are married, you should still file individually b/c once you file jointly, you can't change it back in later years. but then again, i could be completely wrong here!

Re: on your W-4, do you claim 0 or 1
It really depends on how you plan on filing (together or separate). Plus depending on how much you each make and what bracket you'll fall under is the real deciding factor I think. I went to go change to 1 rt after I got married and my HR lady and work recommended I keep it at 0 I guess I should have done a little more research though b/c I'm still not 100% sure why.

I believe if you choose 'married' you spouse is an automatic deduction. I changed mine to married but withhold at the single rate and 0.

yeah i was looking at the rest of the w-4 forms where they explain more, and then showed if you do it together and you go by lowest wage or do it together and go by highest wage what you have to do, so theres quite a few options but we are filing separately so that part didnt help lol. Ugh this is annoying, i wish there were clear and easy answers lol
I do know that dh's parents both claim 0, they both own property so by claiming 0 they get back alot of money, and i will say they get back a pretty decent amount. I know his mom mentioned that and said to dh that if anything will be in his name its better off he leaves it as 0 bc it will help him when it comes to taxes.

I have always claimed Single 1. When I file my income taxes then I will claim Married. The difference with the 0 and 1 withholding on a paycheck is a lot, but on the return is not too much so claiming 1 works best for me.

oh wait so there isnt a big difference with your return whether you claim 0 or 1. WOW then i should do 1. What i do know is that with 1 you get less taken out of your paycheck so you get more money each paycheck which is great bc i also heard that it is a big difference. But i was just worried bc some ppl said with claiming 1 you could end up owing money and thats the only thing i was afraid of, but if thats not a problem then i want to change it to 1

I do accounting for a living and I always claim 1. Unless you are in a different salary bracket then you will not owe money by filing 1 instead of 0. When you file your taxes do you itemize? If you itemize you will always (well for the most part) get money back by filing 1. There are A LOT of things that can be itemized that people dont do and that's why they tend to pay money back to the govnt.

I claim Married 0. I may change back to single 1 depending on my tax refund this year. Last year my accountant said either DH or myself should keep single so we didn't get slammed. I need to make an appointment soon though and i will talk to him again

I claim married 3. Prior to this I claimed single 0. DH and I own a home, so we can do 3 because of the fact that we write off our mortgage interest. Otherwise, we'd both have to do married 0.
