Out of curiousity......did you ever play an instrument?

Out of curiousity......did you ever play an instrument?

and no I'm not talking about the skin flute

I was just wondering how many of us talented NW's play an instrument, or did when you were growing up.

DH is more of a jock type (he plays EVERY sport) and I'm a little spastic let's just say lol.....I've always been in to music....but DH would say I was just a band geek!! I played the fife in a band for 8 years (it wasn't even through school! gasp! I wasn't even forced to do it!! ) truth is I really enjoyed it b/c I was the majorette & fife sergeant (not that anyone really listened to me w/ my 5'3 frame!! ha!!). I liked the music b/c it was an 'ancient' drum corp and we dressed up like dorky George Washington types (minus the white wigs of course! lol......I guess I just loved the bonding experience of playing amongst musicians and that awesome feeling when you do well in competition.

I also played the trumpet for a year or two (I wasn't the greatest) and the flute for a year......I attempted bass guitar, but I didn't hold down the chords tight enough (what can I say, I didn't want calluses!!)

So enough about me.......any one else play an instrument?

Re: Out of curiousity......did you ever play an instrument?

i am a violinist.

it's not my day job, but i freelance (i play a mean pacabel's cannon for weddings ) and play in a couple of orchestras. i was 3 semesters away from getting my mus. ed degree in college when i realized i hated kids and didn't want to teach, but i'm thinking i might go back for my master's in mus. ed. i pretty much want to be submersed in a music environment everyday, all the time and i don't hate kids nearly as much as i did when i was 21

oh, i guess i play the cello and viola, too. i was pretty good at piano back in the day, but i haven't touched it in a long time. same with the guitar.

I played the violn for a very short while. I learned the piano for a summer. Then there was the recorder in elementary school. How many of us remember Hot Cross Buns!! I have my voice also that I used in a couple of musicals through school. But, I love dance and teaching it. I would love to work on my voice again though. I also have a gigtar. That was good when I got fustrated with wedding planning. I would make up songs and lyrics and Michael and I would end up laughing.

wow! the violin!! what a difficult instrument to play!! kudos to you! that's great that you've realized you do want to make it your day job.....and that you don't hate kids as much as before!!

i took piano lessons back in the day, but i would not say i am a pianist by any stretch. also dabbled in guitar and trumpet. studied voice in college and i still sing... i consider the voice an instrument.

oh and I might've needed you on my wedding day.......my mom who is a huge classical music fan promptly pointed out that my organist played a few things slightly wrong (I seriously don't think anyone else noticed!!) I guess you were on your HM though!! so I couldn't have snagged you if I tried!

Well I'm sure you already could imagine, Helen, that I've played a few!

I started piano when I was 7...and I still play. It's part of my job.

I tried clarinet in 3rd grade and HATED it.

Now I guess I'd have to say I really only play piano and recorder because they're required in my occupation! Oh and I play lots of xylophones and non-pitched percussion- you know, classroom instruments.

I played the clarinet for about 4 years til I realized being in the band wasn't cool at my school.. then I moved onto cheerleading!!!

see, you get to have fun as a chorus teacher!! the thought of teaching kids squeaky string instruments. . . . not nearly as fun as banging on things (albeit, expensive things)!

yea I think I was picturing you playing w/ something my niece would have or something its crazy how much instruments cost! then schools cant get enough of them and kids are deprived.....I think every child should learn an instrument! (you can see this will be argument #1 with DH when our future kids are in school....since DH is a walking jock strap! we've come to the conclusion that we'll leave it up to them (which will prob. lead to MORE arguments! ha!

Pick your poison! it gets NOISY! And having to teach these kids how to properly treat the instruments....and getting them to understand the rule PLAY INSTRUMENTS ONLY WHEN ASKED. HEADACHE! That is truly the toughest rule for these kids to follow! It's MADDENING.

Oh geez that is SO true...nothing hurts the ears worse than squeaky OUT OF TUNE violins!

Yeah all my kids ever ask when they walk in is 'Are we gonna play the instruments today?'

Re: Out of curiousity......did you ever play an instrument?

Clarinet for years and I keep threatening to start playing again. I was first chair, so I guess that makes me an uber band geek. I refused to play in my HS's band, though, b/c they were truly awful.

I want to learn piano.

DH played baritone.
