Out of curiousity......did you ever play an instrument?

Original post by HelenZ

and no I'm not talking about the skin flute

I was just wondering how many of us talented NW's play an instrument, or did when you were growing up.

DH is more of a jock type (he plays EVERY sport) and I'm a little spastic let's just say lol.....I've always been in to music....but DH would say I was just a band geek!! I played the fife in a band for 8 years (it wasn't even through school! gasp! I wasn't even forced to do it!! ) truth is I really enjoyed it b/c I was the majorette & fife sergeant (not that anyone really listened to me w/ my 5'3 frame!! ha!!). I liked the music b/c it was an 'ancient' drum corp and we dressed up like dorky George Washington types (minus the white wigs of course! lol......I guess I just loved the bonding experience of playing amongst musicians and that awesome feeling when you do well in competition.

I also played the trumpet for a year or two (I wasn't the greatest) and the flute for a year......I attempted bass guitar, but I didn't hold down the chords tight enough (what can I say, I didn't want calluses!!)

So enough about me.......any one else play an instrument?

yea I think I was picturing you playing w/ something my niece would have or something its crazy how much instruments cost! then schools cant get enough of them and kids are deprived.....I think every child should learn an instrument! (you can see this will be argument #1 with DH when our future kids are in school....since DH is a walking jock strap! we've come to the conclusion that we'll leave it up to them (which will prob. lead to MORE arguments! ha!

walking jock strap- so is my DH! We've got the same challenge ahead! But DH loves music and tries...I mean TRIES to play the guitar.

The great thing about the xylophones is that ANY kid can play them...and they're great for accompanying songs for chorus. It can sound SO amazing. And xylophones are a legit percussion instrument! So if your kid wants to be a percussionist...there's lots to choose from!

I've played the flute since 4th grade. I also played the piccolo, sax, and clarinet. I used to play in the pit for the musicals my high school and college would put on. In one of them I played all four instruments! It was quite the challenge to carry all of them and my stand to hold them out onto the stage

I played the flute for about 6 years. I like it in elementary school, but I wasn't so much of a fan anymore in middle school. I did it anyway because I had to take some kind of music class. I gave it up as soon as I got to high school.

I played the flute through high school, but hated practicing, so I never did very well. I've always wanted to play the piano I took a class in HS but broke my arm half way through.

I played the trombone in fourth grade and I played the guitar for a few months when I was 14 but got frustrated because my fingers were so stubby I couldn't reach all the chords

But to be totally honest I have absolutely no musical talent what so ever..thats totally DHs department he's one of those people that can teach himself how to play instruments.he'd be really good if he did it seriously instead of just messing around. He used to be in his town's music band when he was a kid...played the accordian

I feel like I should finally reply to a post... I am a first time poster, but a loooong time lurker on these boards.

I play piano, viola, and bass. Technically, I can play all the instruments -- just not well. I am an elem general music/chorus teacher who also teaches some band lessons....(I can play a mean 5th grade level trombone).

I can agree -- beginning string students can cause headaches, but nothing is worse than a class of 3rd grade beginner recorders followed by 5th graders doing African drumming -- ugh!

DH is a former band teacher and he still plays in a community band and any pit orchestra's that I direct. However, he also loves the recorder and makes me play duets every now and then.

Our big discussion is which instrument we are going to force out kid to play....(so far its French horn)
