Outer Banks, North Carolina

Has anyone ever been to the Outer Banks in North Carolina? We just agreed to go there with DH's best friend and his family (we are going in a week and a half!). We are staying in Topsail.

Any packing advice, activities, budget, etc? I know very little - the trip was already planned and we are just hopping on.

Topsail isn't in the Outer Banks. But it's wonderful -- we went last summer for a week and had a great time!!!

There's the turtle museum there that you can visit (they're supposed to be moving it into a much larger space soon but I don't know when that's happening). The beach is just GORGEOUS!!! There's a really nice pier you can go to to take pictures, too, if that's your thing.

There are some restaurants on the Island itself which aren't much to write home about but they're fine. Buddy's was the most 'happening' place while we were there and they had just bar food. There's a really great Popsicle place that's definitely worth finding! There's also a NY style deli (which for us was a treat since it's hard to come by in NC) but I guess would be silly for you...

Check the weather as far as what to wear -- be ready for mosquitoes of course. We were there the first week in September and it was warm during the days (beach weather every day) and cooler at night -- like a longer dress or long sleeve layer to throw on maybe.

We are actually seriously considering going back there for our Anniversary weekend this year because DH had such a great time! It's really a great place to go if you like the beach.

Do you know if you're renting a house? The house we rented was fabulous and actually had a ton of stuff there already like beach umbrellas and boogie boards so we didn't have to buy our own. Take lots of sunblock of course.

Feel free to email me if you want any more info about it!

We are renting a house. DH's best friend's wife told me it's in Outer Banks. Shows what I know. How far is it from there?

Thanks, as always, for all of your advice. Hope you are feeling well!

We went a few months ago...right at the end of April. Absolutly beautiful. We rented a beach house that had absolutly everything (down to laundry detergent and toilet paper)....you only had to bring clothes and food. It was amazing. And cheap! We qonly paid $1100 for the week and that included the heated pool. Ill get you the website you can go look at :o)....

Almost all of the house you rent have everything there that you need :o) We had wild horses in our yard every single day....the seashells are so amazing, you find the good ones real early in the morning.

The area that's called the Outer Banks is up near Nags Head, NC -- it's about 200 miles from where Topsail Island is. Topsail is also right on the coast, just way further south.

I absolutely loved the beach at Topsail and it's definitely off the path of the regular vacation-goers, but has its own, laid-back beach vibe. That's why we'd go back there rather than up to the OBX, which is supposed to be a ridiculous crazy tourist spot.

See if this map works...

Nope it didn't work. Here's the link:

Oh...and you DO NOT want to go eat at Jimmy Seafood Buffet...its horrible. It cost us $30 a person, their was so much hype and advertisement about it being this huge elaborate seafood place and it ended up being like a run down ponderosa. I was SO dissappointed...
