passport help

fellow married ladies... if you changed your name after you got married, did you send in your passport to get the name changed on it? I went to the post office and they told me that I have to send in my ORIGINAL marriage certificate along with my passport. They will be mailed back but I don't like mailing the original certificate... did any of you do this? I don't think there is another option- right?

Re: passport help

I sent mine back to get the name changed; however, I didn't realize at the time that I needed to send the original marriage certificate, so I sent a photocopy. After I sent it away, I found out you needed to send the original. I was sweating because I was going to Italy in July and didn't have enough time to resend it, etc.

Well, I got the passport back, name changed and everything, no problem, even with the photocopy!

I probably would not advise you to do this if you need it back right away like I did, otherwise, take the chance. What's the worst that can happen? They'll tell you to send the original then I guess.

Re: passport help

When I got married, I just send it a CERTIFIED copy of my marriage license which I ordered fromthe Town Clerk's office. They sent it back no problem.

Re: passport help

I am going down to town hall next week to change my name on my passport next week, I am going to get a copy of an original marriage license there- I hope they give it to me right away and in the office next door is passports , if not I will order the copies and go back to change the name and give in all necesary info. Does it cost $$ to change the name? I am sure it does - does anyone know the answer?
