Passport name change- getting conflicting info

Passport name change- getting conflicting info

I got my passport this year in January. I was told two things by different people:

1. In order to change my name, I need to get a new passport and pay the money for it

2. If I change my name within 1 year of it being issued that I don't have to pay

Who is right? I'll be pissed if I bought a passport for 1 trip. Well, it was my honeymoon. I can't really be pissed.

If you were the brides I've heard that have done this and didn't have to pay, could you tell me where you did it?

This is correct!

Yes, I was told you have a yr to change your name on your passport without being charged.
I had inquired about this when I was getting my passport.

yup! this is correct. I got my passport in August and I just got my new one with my married name last month. you have 1 year to get it free of charge.

but just so you know, free of charge means - you have to get new pics taken, you should definitely get a certified copy of your marraige cert. never send your original one away. so that's $10. I would recommend sending it away via Fed Ex or UPS so there's tracking info.

so my 'free' passport cost me about $30

the good news however is that my new expiration date for the passport is June 2006, not Aug 2005.

I thought I had heard this. But when I went to do it on Friday they said I needed to pay for a totally new one.

that's nuts. i just got mine free (of course you need a new picture and send in your marraige license...and mail it...so it's not 'free' free)....but yeah, and I look hotter in my new one!

I went to change my last name on my passport about a month ago and already received it in the mail.

You just need to send in your marriage license (or certified copy?), old passport, and application.

You absolutely do NOT have to pay a fee if it's within a year of issuing your last passport.
