Re: PegaLega - quick question

I found this on some other website:

It's actually from the Gaelic Peigi, which I think arose from using Meg as a contraction for Margaret. Gaelic has this odd thing called mutation that goes on with initial letters, especially in the feminine, so that they change their sounds according to case. I can't see that that alone is the reason for M changing to P, but they are both labial consonants (that is, formed with the lips) and so are related (at least to a Scots or Irish speaker).

I haven't researched it as fully as I would have wished (and I don't speak Gaelic) but I am wondering if 'Meg' sounded like another word with bad associations, so it became 'Peg'.

The Gaelic/Celtic name Meg is actually much older than Christianity and is not related to the Greek name 'Margarita' which means 'pearl'. In placenames one sometimes encounters a change from a name derived from a Celtic god, originally 'Meg-' or 'Mag-', to St. Margaret. There is a hill near here called, on the map, St Margaret's Mount but locally known as Meg's Mount. We also have the Gog Magog Hills with a large Iron Age (Celtic) ring fort on it. The name probably just means 'Mother Goddess'.

I know *bonnie* derives from an old scottish word that meant *beautiful*

How funny, I thought Peggie was your real first name. And why do people pronounce Margaretta as Margarita?? I dunno, seems pretty easy to say but then again people butcher so many names that that's more of a rhetorical question!

On a side note - Margarita is my middle name It's my grandmother's name and most of the granddaughters have it as our middle name. There's even a salsa song by that name!

BTW, did your wedding invites have Peggie as your name or Margaretta?

eta: you know, I think I do remember now that you had mentioned your real first name before - took a bit, lol.

i seriously had no idea!

and i happen to think your real name is very pretty.

people are idiots, i don't know why they can't pronounce names correctly.

they were always adding letters to my maiden name (even though its pronounced exactly how its spelled) ... and its soooo rare that my married last name gets pronounced correctly. its only THREE letters long! when i spell it for people they always want there to be more letters ...

the best is that lots of people pronounce my first name as JENNIFER

Yea I just give up...look at is and sound it out~still not Margharita

They went out as Margaretta not Peggie...its hard to explain but both my first an dmiddle name are shortened

Margaretta Lucia if I am being formal
Peggie Lou is not.....so they went out as the formal version since I did NOT want people callig my Peggie Lou for the rest of my life
